Is there a way to determine whether a C4 has a Dana44 or 36 from its VIN #?
If Not, was there a certain engine size or tranny combo that would tell you?
Thanks for any help

1984 = All were D36
1985 - 1996: Automatic = D36, Manual = D44

You can't tell from the vin really but there should be a tag on the rear end, plus if the PO swapped one in like I did you won't know. You can google images to see the differences.

Be aware that some owners will swap out a D36 for a D44 though.

Engine size change that at all?
I am finding I can buy a very high mileage junker C4 thats not exactly "cherry" and get alot of parts for my 63 restomod and spend less then looking for suspensions only and then pay the shipping
So if it runs no shipping lol

As mentioned a manual trans car would have the D44 unless already removed and sold! Happens. Through '88 the rear gear would be a 3.07, an '89 early car a 3.54, later '89 3.33, '90 a 3.33 unless a ZR-1 then 3.45, '91+ are 3.45 but there's reported 3.54's.
If you're wanting complete suspensions you need to know what chassis your using would like. '87 and earlier are substantially different.

Doing an SRiii chassis made for a C4

I would think if doing SRiii then you want to limit your search to '88+ cars so that you can use the front components and the D44 with the L/R suspension units with caliper controlled/activated e-brake.
Do you have the SRiii yet or just planning? They'll let you know which and unless specified differently I believe they intention '88+ components.
