Default Short Throw Shifter Kit - 1986 4+3 Manual

The short throw shifter kits that are available from Eckler's, Mid-America, etc. for $19.99, are they easy to install? Do you install from underneath the car, or do you go in from the top after removing the shift boot and stuff in that area?

Thanks, Chris

From what I recall, you just climb under and install them where the shifter rods attach....

The DN 4+3 is a Doug Nash built Borg-Warner T-10 4speed with the overdrive unit bolted on in place of the tailshaft ***'y. This is old school technology with the shift levers on the outside of the trans case with the shift rods going inside the car to the shifter.

The short throw lever kit has been discontinued and you will have a very hard time finding a set of these levers.

I'm going to try redrilling my shift levers a 1/2" closer to centerline of the levers to shorten the throw. I may like it, I may not.

Thanks Jonathan. I figured it was going to be a challenge finding these. With the picture on Ecklers site these plates seem simple. I wish I could get the measurements and then I'd just have a set machined. Guess I just keep looking around and talking with folks..thks..Mike

I installed the short shift kit on my '85 back in 1988 and with one exception it was a relatively simple install. Because the levers are "shorter" the shifter is no longer in neutral alignment with the transmission. What that means is that when the shifter is in neutral, the transmission is not necessarily in neutral and you may find shifting through the neutral gate is difficult. I found that I needed to readjust the length of the 1/2 and 3/4 linkage to realign the shifter with the transmission. All you need to do is insert a "key" in the shifter mechanism that locks it into neutral and then position the levers themselves in their neutral positions and adjust the rods to fit into the new lever positions. I believe that the kit came with instructions for this, but if you don't have them it is not a difficult task.

This may only have been an issue with the new levers supplied with the Hurst kit and if you re-drill the original levers, it may not be necessary to adjust the rods.

By the way, the kit did not come with a short lever for reverse. As a result, you will notice that while the shifter throws are shorter in 1 thru 4, they remain the same original length for reverse.

Good luck... GUSTO

Thanks GUSTO .... In doing more research on the Hurst website I have found that they sell a HURST 3730015 Install Kit for the Doug Nash, Richmond 5 Speed Shifter which fits a vette and appears to have the exact 2 short throw linkage pieces that Eckler used to sell separately but Hurst has them in an install kit needed for two models of shifters they sell [see below]. I will continue my search. Just keeping a paper trail here in case others get in my situation..thks

From Hurst website: Brand New Installation Linkage Kit for Hurst
4070009 and 4070015 5 Speed Richmond and Doug Nash 5 Speed Shifter.

Hey,
A quick question: I think I need a neutral shifter alignment by the way my shifter has been acting. Is it better to remove the driver's seat and panel/tunnel cover to expose the entire shifter or is it better to hop under the car?

If you have done the neutral alignment, what sort of a tool did you use?

I hear anything , like a hack saw blade, or even a 3/16" drill bit, or a stock, flat key found in the car?

Thanks,
Sharkface
