1996 running normal then dies
I'm sure there has been many posts about this but I need a little help. My LT1 1996 runs well without a problem, hits normal running temperatures then just dies but starts back up if I keep the gas on. I replaced the Ignition control module which did have something to do with it. Stopped it most of the time but still does it every now and then so now I am lost.. any ideas? Im new to fuel injection, most have worked with carbed engines..

I wish some one with more experance then I would step in, however you may wont to look at the opti. Has it put out any codes? Check for old codes. A code reader is cheap and you will need it often on these cars, there good cars, but they are 16 years old.The reason I say this is I have a 96 LT4, it had issues like you discribe,it was the opti. Hope this helps

Well it seems to have good fuel pressure but I have not checked it with a gauge at the moment. I replaced the ignition control module as that is what a friend of mine told me it was. It helped a lot with the idle and now it doesn't do it as often but it does it every 20 mins or so :/ Right when it hits 190F it seems

I've been going through the same thing. I replaced the IAC and I thought that cured my issue for over a month, then it came back. Replaced the ICM (GM/delphi only) and even checked the coil, to no avail. Mine's looking like the opti, but I haven't been able to replicate the issue since it's cooled off. My dies right at operating temp as well. If I leave the hood open, it won't do it at all. Close the hood and it'll die within a few minutes. But now it fires right back up, so I can't test anything. Which SHOULD mean it's a heat sink issue and should be the ICM, but I'm willing to bet that the OPTI is having heat issues.

Yeah I had a buddy of mine come over and look at it and it wouldn't die and it ran perfect..with the hood open as well. And it only died once driving but came right back. I bet it is the opti considering where it is. Do you know how much one goes for? Would the spark wires do this at all? Some have been replaced on mine. Hopefully I can get it fixed before summer especially with AZ heat

Expect to pay around $350-400 for a proper AC Delco or Delphi unit. Won't be a plug wire issue. It would just miss and/or run bad.

Seriously doubt it. I'm pretty sure mine was pure coincidence. I'll hopefully be dropping mine off to my vette mechanic next week so he can make sure and get a new opti installed if so. I was holding out to do it myself, but time is more of an issue these days for me.

Well I called my buddie I got it from and the Distributor is fairly new. Replaced with the engine. So im really doubting its that. Its not mis firing, theres a spark and now it dies only every now and then. I cleaned out the MAF sensor and IAC and it helped. Now it rarely does it but still does it. And I got a code for a faulty crank position sensor. But isn't that for detecting mis fire? I don't think that could cause anything but im going to replace it anyways.... thanks for the input

The crankshaft position sensor identifies position of the crankshaft to the ignition control module (ICM), engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
• When not replaced, vehicle could experience no- or hard start, long crank time, misfire, lack of power, excessive hydrocarbons in oil, spark plug fouling, catalytic converter failure, poor fuel economy, CEL/MIL illumination or intermittent shutdown
Hopefully this will fix it

Well, let us know if that fixes is. Looks like mine won't get fixed till the new year. Mechanic is WAY backed up. Figures.

The crankshaft sensor installs into lower left hand side of the cover. As you are looking at this picture. The sensor is on the passenger side of the engine.
A bolt & bracket holds the sensor.

I had this issue on my 92. It was the Optispark. The quality on a lot of Optisparks are generally pretty bad and seem go out early. There are a lot of posts in Tech about this.

Yeah the sensor was bad. It was running fine again but a code finally came up for the opti. Its getting replaced now and so is the fuel pump because the pressure isn't what it supposed to be and the fuel pump is going out I guess. Hopefully I wont have to replace the opti again anytime soon! Thanks guys for the help.
