Default lovin' the new engine!

I have about 600 miles on the new build now. The new tune from pcmforless will be here on Tuesday, so I'm still taking it easy on it. That said, I'm really impressed by the throttle response this combination has. Coupled with the new converter, it's really taken me by surprise a couple of times doing things like hitting it a little to get through a yellow light, pass a car, etc. It REALLY wants to rev. I did hit it once in 2nd just to see how it would pull and it pulled hard right to 5500. The heads and cam really improved things. The cam is great - it idles smooth, pulls well, just does everything that I wanted.

Interestingly when I pulled the old y-pipe off I found that the rear cat had been gutted. The front cats appeared to be good - we cut off the inlet pipes just to check them out.

The really odd thing was the weight of the old converter. I didn't have a scale to put it on but I swear it was well over 100 pounds. When I pulled it off the trans I had to drop it on the floor. It was too heavy to try to lift up over the fender and there was no place to set it anyways. The replacement converter was around 40 pounds as I would expect for a 12" unit. I took the old one over to O'Reilly's to dump with their metal recycling and even the young guy who works there was amazed at how heavy it was. The first time he went to lift it, he almost fell forward.

I think the lighter converter is a big part of the responsiveness and I'm sure the extra stall speed helps too

For those that are late to the party, my combo is:

87 short block w/64k miles
Scoggin-Dickey LT-4 repro cam .480 lift 204/211 @ .050 on 115 separation - used an Edelbrock timing set and installed it at 0 degrees
GM Fast Burn heads
Accel high-flow base (welded up to seal the FB port size), matching runners, ported plenum, 58mm tb
LT-1 manifolds
Magnaflow catted y-pipe and new center cat
Flowmasters
March under drive pulleys
Bosch III 23# injectors
Holley AFPR
converter from Price's Garage - stock rebuilt unit for a 97 Vortec V-6 S-10

Once the tune is in I'm going to do something about my trans. I think I'm going to need to replace it but I ran out of time doing the engine replacement and had to get it back on the road or I'd have done it at the same time.

Can't wait to get the tune in there so I can see how it really feels all the way through first and second

Tha Fast Burns have 3/8" studs and SD actually wants you to run 1.5's rather than 1.6's with this cam. Sorry, but i'm sure they'll sell

You do know that once the tune is in, we want a video. Glad you got it running and are happy. Nothing more heartbreaking than being disappointed in your new powerplant.

You will need a new trans. My 700R4 went up in smoke(started slipping) within the 1st 40 miles after my tune. I had Holley Stealth Ram and cc502 cam but it was a similar set up. The trans had some miles on it who knows how long a rebuild would last but I would beef it up if I were you.

The convert may have been heavy because it had Fluid still in it.
When I got my tranny From the frieght delivery I lifted the Tranny and the convert of the truck by myself.
When I took the Converter off my bad tranny it was also heavier than the stock converter that came with the tranny I bought.
When you installed the new converter You filled it with fluid right?

I filled it with all it could hold. No way that it holds 60+ pounds of fluid though. I'm not exagerating when I say the converter was well over 100 pounds. It easliy weighed more than my ex and she was 105 pounds.

Just ordered one with RichieRichz06. Brand new unit from GM. They will install it at Able along with my shift kit and existing converter and I still get the 3 year/100K warranty. Helluva deal for a couple grand. It should be there in a week, so I just have to limp it along till then.

If you end up with trash in the converter it will take out your new trans. Do you have a DD?

I've been out of town for a funeral so haven't had a recent update. Last I heard he was still working on the Dakota Digital dash interface gadgets in between other jobs.

The 91 IS my DD

They'll warranty it with my new converter, 36yr/100k and even install my shift kit. If it blows up they'll replace it - parts and labor included. If that happens, I'll buy another one of these converters since it was cheap anyways.

Got the tune today. It idles better and it's nice and smooth - but the check engine light comes on when it warms up now. I'll have to pull the codes in the morning.

How are they tuning full throttle? Every time you use high throttle you're putting the engine at risk. You need to send them an A/F dyno chart. When I weighed the stock converter it was 50 pounds.

Not sure how they figure it out, but then again how do any of the mail-order tuners figure it out?

Turns out the code is h32 due to my temporarily missing EGR feed.
