315's 17" on c4 what do you think?

Depends on your offsets in the rear. 55mm will stick out. I have 315's out back with 50mm offsets and they sit almost flush. You can search here for the wheel thread and see a bunch of examples of 315's on 55mm offsets

It's not the 17" you have to worry about, they'll fit fine on a 17" wheel, it's the width, you need an 11" wide wheel to handle 315's.

Time for the "Big Doggie" mod to tuck them under?

Essentially you use hubs from an 85-87 ABS rear and machine your bearing retainers down by 13.8mm. The ABS rings from your 88 and later car have to be pressed on to match up with your car. Narrows the rear end enough to tuck the 315's under without flares.

Melting Slicks
if they are the 36mm offset they will fit just..
I have seen several early c4 vettes with the 11 inch rims, some put a lot of negative camber to keep the top of the tire within the guard.

Yeah 10.5 minumum and a good ZL 1 offset ! I have a pair of 315 B F G Drag Radials I run .
The only problem I'm aware of is if you run large tires and drive a lot you need to get alignment or risk rear bering failure !
The cars were not designed for that much meat and of course it throws off alignment and causes stress on componets like bearings.
Me I don't drive much with them on !

How do wider tires "throw off" the alignment? If the wheel offset were significantly different from the stock offset (like chrome reverse wheels give) I could see it causing a bearing wear issue, but I'd have trouble accepting that this mod would do that.
Maybe some of the folks who've driven this setup for a while can offer up some experiences.

Had mine at the alignment shop yesterday to be sure.
The tech said it was right on the money...
I switched from 275/40's on 9.5" rims on the rear to 315/35's on 11"s.
No change.
