I used a 12 point 1 1/4 inch socket made by Gear Wrench. It's the perfect size to push the bushing out yet barely small enough to fit through the hole. Just put an extension in it backwards and hit with a hammer. Now I dont remember which direction to hit it though. I had the rear housing off. Change the big o ring where the tailhousing meets the case while you're at it, the thing is like $4 from a dealer, mine was leaking.

Yes the speedo gear connector needs to come of and then you can undo the nut holding the gear in and pull the gear out. You also need to support the transmission and engine when removing the bolts from the torsion beam. (the front y pipe, cat and mufflers will need to be removed first). It is fairly straight forward and you should have no problems.
Check the universal joints while you are under the car, also check the half shaft universal joins they take a hell of a beating.
If the yoke has any wear marks you can clean it up with emery cloth.
