My LT1 vs. L98 comparison.
I test drove a stock LT1 today for Mervz. The L98 without a doubt slams you into the seat much harder than the LT1 does off idle. The LT1 pulls harder up the RPM range, but off the line is way different. :yesnod: Throttle response also seems a little "different" in the LT1.

I would have to agree. After I bought my vette I test drove a 95 Z28 and the "in town" feel was very different. On the interstate, handsdown the LT1. Acceleration from 70 - 110 was very strong compared to the L98.

Today, I test drove a 91 coupe for "Jim85IROC".
While a little off topic, I realized that I really do prefer a convertible over the coupe. I also like the 6 speed, but I wasn't all that comfortable with the new dash.

What gearing was in the LT-1? I know my 86 with 2.59 felt like a slug compared to my 95 with the 3.07's.

I installed a 4.10 gear in my LT4 and now I'm breaking the wheeels loose on the 2-3 shift. Not chirping them, but breaking 'em loose and invoking the traction control. The LT1/4 cars need a 4.10 gear to really run right.

I'm sure both are nice...BUT the L98 torque sure does slam you back in the seat(Speaking for my own in addition). I think they're both nice in their own ways.

You know what I realized after going from an L98 to my LT4? Most of the difference people find is because you have to drive them differently. If you try to take off in an LT1/4 like an L98 car, it will feel different. Get used to driving the LT1, and you can take off just as good.

Re: My LT1 vs. L98 comparison. (Mr Dave)
I don't have a real accurate opinion, because my 88 had 2.59's. But IMO my lt1 has a bigger SOTP feels then my L98. Its probably due to the gearing (2.59 vs 3.45) plus Auto vs 6spd.
My friends have also said this.
And I agree the LT1's sweet spot is 40- 100+. It gets up and moves in a heart beat. :)

So what is better overall? LT1 or L98?

Re: (scorp508)
L98, LT1, LS1 each one is an improvement on the next version. Everyone has an opinion and with a little work each one can out preform the other. Take it for what it is progress. I'll put an L88 against all of them!

Gee, I like them both!
The 86 is a little faster, to about 15 mph, then the 94 will eat it alive!
I'm sure the 94 would be much better with the 3:07's that the 86 has.
It is amazing how much difference the is between the two cars!
The 86 will beat the crap out of you in 600 miles, the 94 does not.
It is so much more comfortable!

Can't be that much difference, L98 is rated at only 5ft/lb more of torque. All other things being equal, that would give the L98 the jump for a very short distance, then the LT1 would blow it away. :yesnod: :jester

315 / 0.83 = 379.5 ft/lb at the crank.
Thats a bunch more than they say! And the car isn't a freak either, pretty much every other near stock L98 I have seen has been very close to that range.
Don't think that I am putting it down any. Not at all!! It was a great ride. Just stating how they are different.

Re: (scorp508)
have to put my 2 cents in here. 100 posts in 1 1/2 years, here i come.
i dynoed my stock l98 after my rear y pipe fell off, my exhaust ended at the main cat. had 330 something rwtq. lt1's have, what 260-270, lt4's 280-290?

Re: (Raistlin)
GM may have under rated the Torque of the L98 because of 700R4 and 4+3 capacities.
The Syclone & Typhoon were rated at 360ft-lbs but in reality they are around 420ft-lbs (one of the designers claims this and the RWD Dyno back this up). The rating of the 4L60/700 in the early 90's was 360ft-lbs.
