+1 For dryer sheets!
I've done this for the past 2 winters I owned the car and have had 0 mice problems. It takes a few days for the smell to air out. Plus they are cheap.

Another place they can in through is the inner shifter boot on a straight drive trans. I don't know about the automatics, but on the manuals if that boot is torn they can enter from on top of the trans and have a clear entry to the dash via underneath cup holder. I asked an engineer why mice eat supposedly inedible wire and he said the reason is that they make the coating for the wires out of a vegetable oil compound.

Moth ***** (also known as paradichlorobenzene) in some coffee cans, or cool whip containers will keep them out.
I use this trick when storing my boat for the winter. Deters mice, squirrels, and raccoons.

No Mice Problem
I put poison blocks in every corner and by every door in the garage. I put a open container of at least 25 REAL moth ball in each car. I rather smell moth ***** a little while until the car airs out in a ride, than to replace another interior and repair damaged wiring.

I had one get into the armrest storage on my wifes door where she had placed a pack of those red candy peanuts and a pack of sunflower seeds. We forgot to get them out. He chewed right through the top of the door panel at the handle and down in the compartment. My garage is not a part of the house and we live in the hills of East Tennessee. Needless to say I was furious and have taken precautions like edible "treats" for the lil ****ard placed them throughout the garage. ;-(
