Sounds like they made some much needed improvements in the later years.
On my '96, you have to break the rear tires loose pretty good before it kicks in.
So, I only turn it off if that is what I really intend to do.
I will guaranty you, that the "average" driver would lose control of their car without ASR.
There are YouTube videos out there that prove that.

Like others, I turn mine off everytime I drive it. The pedal push when it kicks in is really harsh and surprises me more than anything.
If I'm stuck out in the rain I'll leave it on but that's rare to be out in my car in the rain.

When it was street driven it still tried to wreck the car a couple of times.
Right hand turn - hit the real rough pavement. The ASR decided it was slipping and took all the throttle away, meanwhile a line of traffic barreling at 50 mph was comming right at the driver door.
