Turn off check engine light '86
My '86 passed CA smog with no problem but the check engine light stayed on and they won't clear it for DMV registration renewal.
Disconnected battery, still no luck. Any ideas.

Turn off check engine light
We did that, took the bulb out for the test, but was told it has to come on when the key is turned on and then go out, so because we had the bulb out it was an incomplete, now it is back in but it stays on. CA is tough!

Yes an 86 does throw codes...check the codes with a paper clip.. you have to read the flashes. Do a search for checking codes with a paper clip. I'm on the laptop and dont have access to all my bookmarks.

Found it, Mass Air Flow Sensor, code 34. $125 at Auto Zone, Thank you all! We really learned something tonight about the car! Had it 7 years, hiding my face in embarrassment, I know so little. Thank goodness for Corvette Forum, you're the best!

Steve, thanks for the advice but we changed the mass air flow sensor last night and today it passed smogged again, only in flying colors this time, and the service engine light is out. What a relief, smogged and renewed registration, only had 1 day left to get this all done, so all ended well. But I will save that info for future reference, thanks.

Have you ever changed the MAF relays? One controls power and the other controls the burn off (cleaning). Periodic replacement is considered maintenance after several years on these cars. They are located on a bracket behind the battery, are relatively inexpensive, and pretty easy to change. I would change the relays before I replaced the MAF.

Absolutely correct. Had the code twice in twelve years. Never replaced the MAF, just the relays.
