The correct answer is buy whatever fits... you ask what oil is better and you get a hundred people, each with "facts" who will tell you a hundred different things. Same with filters.

On my 87 I have used pretty much every filter possible over the years and it is still running strong with almost 200k miles on it. On my 02Z I usually use either Mobil 1 or NAPA depending on where I am shopping... no reason, just because.

My local dealer sells it for about $6.50 after my NCOA member discount.
I have bought these at Wal-Mart for under $4.00.

It's an old trick to use the Chevy truck filter on your car. It's much longer. That's what I use on all my cars.

A side note about Fram.....

Fram filters fail in a strange way, they don't blow open the bypass valve, but clog so no oil can get through. It doesn't sound like it makes any sense, but three times in one week I had vehicles come into the shop with Fram filters and NO oil pressure. I changed the filter to an A/C and topped off the oil. ...Instant oil pressure. Go figure. Over the years, I've had that happen MANY times. That's enough for me to swear off the orange nemesis for good.

For what it's worth, I use Wix or A/C. Like I said, I get the bigger truck filter. They make an even bigger filter for marine use, but you better have a lifted truck because it's about a foot long.

It looks like it would take an extra 4-5oz but no, it's not noticeable at all Josh.

Why in the hell don't they all do this? Just charge me a quarter more for the filter so the cost monsters are happy and put the nut on the end. Life would be so much simpler. Though my set of 18" Channellocks have never met a filter they couldn't conquer.
I always used Fram on all my vehicles for most of my life. Then when I got the vette my mech recommended Wix so I changed to wix.

But I never had any problem with Fram and still use it on my PU.

I agree with this. If the motor is in good shape, what is there to be filtered ? As long as you are not grinding up internal metal and combustion is not blowing past the rings. the oil should stay clean. If the oil gets hot enough to cook it, thats whole nother matter.

Back in the 80's, I had a Honda Prelude and the local Honda dealer had a sign up in their waiting room "Fram filters kill Honda engines". As mentioned by Earthquake68, dealer said the Fram's clogged up and they had numerous engine failures.
Never used Fram since then. Use Mobil 1 or K&N on the vette.

Royal Purple, just because I used Royal Purple oil. I read an article where a vet got a 4 or 5hp boost with RP over M1. They hooked it up to a dyno, ran with Mobile 1 (I'm pretty sure it was mobile 1), drained it, refilled with RP and ran again with confirmed results.

I doubt the filter made as much difference as the oil, but I figured what the hell.

Wix. Even though the nearest dealer is 30 miles away
(but close to the GF's place).

I used to run Frams back in pre-vette days, until I saw
some cut open. The cheapness turned my engineer's
stomach.

There are probably several pretty good brands, and a
couple where the design specs were set by the
accountants.

BTW, be a little leery of the Wix website's dealer list.
The address they have for my dealer is a very naughty
lingerie shop. The parts store USED to be there. 15
years ago.

Napa 7099

Due to add on oil cooler adapter this is a short filter for ground clearance.
