Default Dumbass ???? of the day. Are the fittings on my 84 metric?

I'm a first time vette owner... just a couple of months... a sweet 84. I'm not a wrench guy but I want to learn to do some things myself. So I ask... are the fittings on my 84 all metric? Thanks

get yourself a quality metric and an S.A.E (American specific), set of sockets and wrenches.

And like hooked073 sez, you're NOT a dumbass for asking! we've alll been tricked by the metric/s.a.e. mix on American cars since the '70's...

I didn't take offense at all. I should have said nuts & boths in the first place but thought fasteners sounded more knowledgeable. LOL And I'm certainly not very knowledgeable about whats under the hood... that beautiful hood on my 84.... but each day I read the new posts here and in about a month I've learned more about cars than in my previous 60 years. Suddendly it seems to matter to me to know what makes my car run.

i have found on my 85 that probably 98% of the fasteners are metric - every once in awhile, they (GM) slip in a "unified national standard" fastener. haven't figured out the reasoning, but most of the UNS hardware found is on the engine.

I'm on my 2nd C-4 (an 86 for 12 yrs and now a 95 for 1 year)and still occassionally have to buy a new tool. Go to Harbor Freight for SAE, Metric, Torx, Fuel Pres, hand pumps for changing fluids, brake bleeders, etc. They are cheaper, and I have used their impact sockets since mid 80's and never broke one. Remember you are not running a commercial shop so application is very light. good luck with your C-4 and with the help of this Forum you can do anything successfully with patience.

I've noticed that anything that screws into the engine is SAE and everything else is metric, seems like it anyhow

Thanks... I did check out Harbor Freight this afternoon... they have a pretty good sale going on and there is a 20% off coupon (for one item) that was in the coupon section of last Sunday's paper and is in the recent AARP mag... probably at lot of other places too. Thanks again.... everyone!

I got a great Craftsman Tool Kit on sale that has both in one case in 1/4., 3/8, ½ inch drives. It comes in very handy.

I got the same kit I carry around with me when I go someplace. It may be overkill in some cases but I have about everything I need to do all basic things my experience allows me to do.
