its like a rule of thumb for the f bodies-first thing you do is get the 3.73 or 4.10s how come you dont see this as much in corvettes? Is it a price factor? I thought the vettes needed way more gear....... an LT1 6 speed f body with 4.10s is nasty, i would imagine a vette would be even faster......just curious

Wow, I don't remember it being that much - maybe prices have gone up a lot. I just went next door to the Dodge dealer and had them get me the Viper 4:10 gearset for my D44. They are obviously not listed in the Dodge parts book for a Corvette, as a matter of fact I think they were listed in their Mopar performance parts catalog. Either way, they fit and work great. Of course if you have a D36 the above does not apply.

Man, who would buy a Corvette with an automatic transmission? - (just kidding!). Of course you could always spend $5k on Jessies live axle conversion and then you would have the cheap ring and pinion replacement cost of a regular differential (yeah, I know that's not practiacal either).

Why would you pay more to set up a D44 head than a 9"
I didn't
Speedo are gears are off the shelf if you know where to look

Uni's are Spicer 1350 series ; from any decent truck or driveshaft shop.
I can buy them off the shelf in Australia

alot of zr1ers change to 410s. they are very easy to set up reallyas far as u joints go . do nt go cheap get the super spicer aka 799 series for the 1/2 shafts. breaking a 1/2 shaft can really ruin your wallet. denny drive shaft service has a whole kit for the c4 all 6 ujoints andcaps for about 150 .it really is cheap ins . ps never get u joints with zerks , unless you dont like your car

I think the majority of vette owners...myself included...got their cars for the "fun factor" among other reasons of course. I have no clue how much quicker my car would be with say 3:73 vs the 3:07's I have now, but I remember when I put in a 4:10 geared posi unit in my former chevelle that had 3:42's the difference was pretty obvious. Of course mileage went to h#ll as well. For the guys that regularily hit the strips or like to do a little "stop light battling", NOT that I would ever condone such activities I can see gear replacement being necessary. Heck if all I wanted was a fast 1/4 mile car I could have kept the chevelle, put the money I spent on the vette into it and have a very quick ride. But once I got bit by the vette "bug" there was no going back. Besides I kind of like things like a/c, braking. handling, creature comforts and a LOT better gas mileage

4.10 perfect gear for these cars, never had a hot rod of any type that had the stock gears for long.
They arent as low as youd think, still easy to drive. Now 4.56 or lower different story.

Why is it the cost of a ring and pinion higher for a C4 than, for example, a 'F' body?
What's so different about them to justify the higher cost?

It's a hassle if you have an auto (which most C4s are). The consensus is that if you have an auto, you need a D44 swap, which means another driveshaft, etc., all of a sudden a "mod" has gotten really expensive.

Economy of scale
Say 25% Vettes in any one year with fitted with D44 divided by those that want to do a gear change equals not very big market potential
