Orbital buffers good for C4's???
Given the age of my 85, could I still use an orbital buffer on my car and not have it affect the clear coat? I was told that the clear coat wasn't as advanced as the clear coats today and that it would negatively affect the clear but I think using one could really help me get rid of faded spots on my hood. Do you guys use orbital buffers on your older vettes? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

orbital buffer
hope you are not getting an orbital and a high speed confused. Orbitals are used more for polishing and the high sped for buffing, usually with a very low grit like Turtle or 3-M. The Turtle "white" for oxidation, light scratches and stains. You could use a variable speed buffer you you really need some experience. Always a possibility of burning the clear coat on the flat surface as well as any edges running it too fast. If you don't have the experience I would suggest the white on a clean terry or have it professionally done.

If you don't know what you're doing or not paying attention it's very easy to burn the paint with an orbital buffer. You're much better off with a dual action polisher like the Porter Cable 7424XP.

Orbital is fine.....Go for it!
Rotary is a different animal....You need skills to operate them without damaging yer paint.
Really...check out the Car Care section.
There's ALL the info you could ever want!

The 7424 IS an orbital, dual action polisher......the safest of the polisher tools.
What I THINK you are referrring to as being more delicate are the rotary polishers.

I can not stand polishers. I do all my polishing and buffing with a variable speed rotary buffer on everything. I just change the cloth/foam pad based on what I am doing. Its not that hard just keep it moving and dont spin it too fast.
