Is it politically correct to say I have ZR-1 wheels?
I had a guy get very angry with me a couple of days ago because i was describing my car to him and I mentioned I have put the ZR-1 5 spoke wheels on my 85. He said, "did they come of a ZR-1." I said no. I then said that they are actually A mold wheels custom done for 84-88 corvettes with original 16 inch wheels. He then said, "why did you call them ZR-1 wheels if they are not actually ZR-1 wheels. Don't try and claim what you don't have."
Was I in the wrong by describing them as ZR-1 wheels or was he just an A-hole. I in no means am trying to say I HAVE a ZR-1 to anybody.

These are the real ZR-1 wheels. A company in Japan makes the GM factory ZR-1 wheels, which is A-Mold. They did not make ZR-1 wheels in 16”, only in 17”. There a lot of copies, but the OE wheels have a raised stamp, which reads (JWL) on the front face near the outer lip of the wheel.

I should add that I have the AFS wheels. I bought them because I love the look and wanted 17 inch wheels without spacers.
The thing that bothers me the most is that he doesn't even have a ZR-1 or even a corvette.

The reason I think he barked is because you don't have ZR1 wheels. You have wheels that look like ZR1 wheels. The orginal ZR1 wheels were very light and very strong; and VERY expensive. So there is a certain respect applied to the orginal ZR1 "A Mold" wheels.
ZR1 reproduction wheels look very good.
Don't know why the guy got upset, but must know something about the heritage and did not like calling a repro a "ZR1" wheel. That's all I can think of.
Personally I would enjoy the wheels and not really worry about it.

What irks me is when people are selling them.
If they're not 36mm offset on the rears, it's ZR-1 Style for the 5 spokes
If they're 50mm black it should be Grand Sport rims
If they're just 50mm silver or polished GS offset
When you say ZR-1 rims, to me it's any of the 3 ZR-1 rims they produced from 90-95. I love people when they just say they want to buy a set of ZR-1's and I email them a pic of mine for sale. They usually get pissed.

Sounds like an a-hole to me.
My two cents is that you have any of the three types of ZR1 style wheels and they are in the 17x9.5 & 17x11 sizes with ZR1 offset, then you have ZR1 rims. Otherwise, you have a-molds (or GS wheels, etc). :)
While I find it a little irksome when I disagree with people's description of their wheels, I don't know if I'd get ticked off or lose sleep over it though...

Its not the wheels that make that car.....
Something about the motor in ZR1's is special I'm told.
I have ZR1 wheels. Who cares who makes them. They look great. I might as well say I have a F-body motor in it too.....
