Early C4 Fuel Economy
Sorry if this has already been asked a million times - I had a quick look but couldn't see anything.
What is the fuel economy like on a 85-89 C4? I am interested to see what the difference is around town and on the highway, stock and modified.
Thanks.

My stock 87 automatic got 28MPG manually calculated on my trip back from Bowling Green, Kentucky last summer. The gas mileage is really good on these cars

My 85 gets about 18 mph city/hwy and 23 mpg hwy. Best ever was 26 mpg at 45 mph over a long work zone. I have the performance rear end. The standard rear end get better millage.

I have upgraded the engine in my 85 to the ZZ4 short block (see below). I am running about 400+ HP with 3.07 gears and an automatic. 21 mpg around town/freeway and 28.4 MPG on the freeway for long trips. Just went from bay area to Seattle and back (over mountains) about 1800 miles for the trip and averaged 28.4 MPG.

WOW, i dont believe it Only kidding. I think that gas mileage was an important factor when the LT1 came out, something to do with government mandates. The only government mandate on my 86 is the infamous breadbox

I used to get about 20mpg in normal driving when I had my '87 4+3. I did try to get decent economy as I was not making a lot of money when I had that car (not to suggest I am now, but enough to buy gas). On the highway at steady-state cruising, they do quite well. It's the speeding up where they don't. I get closer to 16-17 now in my '90 because my commute is much more stop/go.

No '85-89 made anywhere close to 400hp. The closest was the B2K's but their mileage ratings were much lower, 14/21 if I recall. 28mpg from 230hp doesn't sound quite as impressive. No surprise though, technology keeps on marching forward.
