Default Window Adjustment....Winter Project..

Since I bought the car the drivers window has always rolled up to high and I have had to keep the window at less than all the way up to be able to close the door.....The door alignment is perfect and it shuts easily with the window down....After doing many searches and studying the problem I have decided to:

1. loosen every bolt and adjustment on the window.

2. raise the window all the way up.

3. move the window around by hand to get it where it should be

4. tighten everything down....

Hopefully this will work and not take all day on saturday...Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks in Advance

You probably have a broken window stop guide. Check out my thread here.

I saw your thread in my searches...I checked this tonight...It does not seem to be broken..What it does it hits the back stops first then it hits the front stops and then the top tilts in...the tilt in adjustment is all the way towards the outside of the door...what causes the stop of movement of the window?...is it electrical load or is it purely mechanical?

I have worked on my 85 but I don't think it is the same as yours. On mine it would appear that the stop is purely physical. Once the window stops you release the switch and that turns it off electrically. I don't think it is anymore complicated than that.

Yes, ditch your plan, and don't say I didn't warn you!

Go with Rick's suggestion and fix or adjust your stop..... Loosen every bolt on the window and you'll be cursing for weeks.

Default Window Adjustment Update...

Well I did not loosen everything at the same time....But I did eventually
loosen everything at one time or another...Since I thought the window was going too far up and kicking in at the last minute I:

1. Loosened all 3 window to regulator bolts (2 rear 1 middle )

2. Looosened the front and back window stops

3. rolled the window up and adjusted the window to where I thought
it should be from the outside by hand. Then i tightened down two of
the three window bolts that were accessible when the wndow is
rolled up. I also adjusted and tightened down the front and rear
window stops.

4. I played with it for another hour or so tweeking and adjusting.

5. I road tested the car and found that I had some wind noise at 55-70
but since the door shuts nice an the window seal is probably worn
in the the old position..I will leave it alone for the time being

There is definetly an art to adjusting the windows !!!

I went thru the adventure of adjusting the windows too. I have mine where they should be but I have a little wind noise at the top of the drivers side. It does not sit on the weather strip like it should for the top 2 inches. I am going to pull the strip and put some bedding compound under that area to raise the strip to the glass... just 2 cents.

IMO, adding some compound or sealer under the rubber is the wrong way to do it. If there's a gap between the top horizontal edge of your window and the roof's weather stripping, the problem can be fixed at the rear window guide. There are 2 bolts holding it, but it can be adjusted 3 ways to pull the window in or out. Then do a leak down to check the seal.

It took me 15 minutes to adjust my drivers window after replacing the window regulator.....The passenger side took 3 days

I was thinking of doing what you suggested also...But I may wait and
replace the weatherstrip since will probably be replacing most of it in the near future..I have learned with other cars that no matter how many miles on a car that the best improvment you can make to it is new weatherstrip...it's like shocks...over time you barely notice how bad they are until you get new ones......then you feel the difference.

Even if its the top 2 inches and the rest is fine? it's a gap about 1/16th of an inch.

If you mean that the window (where the arrow is) isn't pressing down against the vertical B Pillar weather stripping enough - then yes, you can adjust that.

This is kind of hard to explain and there are a couple ways you can make the adjustment...If you look at the arrows pointing to the rear guide, that is where you'll make the adjustments... Inside the door behind the top arrow, there's another bolt holding a guide that tips the window in and out - towards the interior or out away from the door. You'll have to bring the top of that slotted lever in towards the interior a hair.
