Default Power brake booster

Question, my brake pedal will almost go to the stop at the bottom, I have changed the master cylinder, brake pads, no fluid loss any where I can find, fluid level is never low. I can't find a vacuum leak anywhere, do you think my problem is the brake booster?

Bill in my opinion you know you have booster issues when you have to stop your car with the muscles in your leg.

Default Crack

Check to see if you have a crack in it, that's what happened to me and I replaced the brake booster.

ditto.

It may not even have to be a crack. The diaphragm could be bad.

So if the booster is going bad, will the pedal travel almost to the floor?

Mine did, had to put all of me onto the brake pedal to stop it and it went to the floor like standing on concrete. Also, I'm no expert, however, my mechanic told me that when I stopped and the engine 'revved' just a tiny, tiny bit, that, along with the pedal issue, was a dead giveaway. Got mine replaced part and labor for around $250. Most places here don't charge just to look and see. Good luck.

Really doesn't sound like the booster. Sounds more like you have air trapped in the lines. Do a really good total bleed (buy speedbleeders).

Default brake booster

If your braking system is working, but your power booster is not you will still have full pedal. Extreemly hard to stop car this way. Sounds like you have air in the system somewhere. Just my $.02

Good luck.

I have a spare brake booster, think I will try that, and see if it makes any difference. Will let you know what I find out.

Try bleeding the brakes first and see what happens. Also, you mentioned you replaced the master cylinder, did you bench bleed that before you installed it?

Just replaced my booster this past weekend. Pedal was very, very hard to press but it did not go anywhere near the floor. Almost felt quite the opposite - pedal goes down farther with a functioning booster. Doesn't sound like a booster to me....

If I recall when my booster went bad I could hear the sound of air escaping whenever I depressed the brake pedal. I went with the steel replacement one rather than pay twice as much for the plastic one. As far as the installation went, it was not easy to move around down there but it only took a couple of hours to get it in. That has been over 3 years ago and it still works fine.

My question is did it have the same symptom before you changed the M/C and pads? If you didnt, then you have air in the lines as many have said. The symtom of a bad booster is a rock hard pedal, not a pedal that goes to the floor. I think at this point swapping the booster is a waste of time.

Default booster

Bill,

You are not fixing anything by changing your booster. BTW, let us know how much it sucks to change it out. I have changed many. But I would never change out a good one.

Evtreemly difficult to reach top bolts. Good Luck!

Corvette Mike
