Default Cleaned Up the Valve Covers - 88 L-98

With a 100K on the car, the valve covers were not looking good. It's a PITA to remove them but worth the effort. My emblem was long gone so E-bay provided it. Anyhow, it looks a lot better now, even the 20 year old stock look.

You did a great job! What did you use to clean the valve covers?

Thanks for the compliments. I used that Purple grease cutter and Simple Green to clean them and then just used Duplicolor Aluminum Engine Paint; 2 light coats and one medium. I also wiped them real well with a degreaser solvent before painting them.

The worst part of the job is getting them off and then back on w/o letting the gasket slip out of place. Took about 6 hours total but I did a lot of cleaning, wire wrapping, etc.

Also discovered that 1 bolt and 1 nut for the AC bracket were very loose ... glad I caught it.

For the emblem, jbcorvetteparts ebay store has them ... not cheap though. $34 + $7 shipping. The emblem seems decent and came with the double sided tape already attached. They had the emblem to me in 4 days ... quick.

All said, it cost me about $59 for the paint, new gasket and the emblem.

Did you use Duplicolor Cast Coat Aluminum #1650? I'm thinking of doing my valve covers, plenum and runners. How is it holding up???

Nice job,.

I used the same paint on my valve covers once I sanded and refilled them.

Did you strip the old paint off and wet sand it before you painted? And what valve cover gaskets did you use?

I plan on doing mine after I degrease the engine bay and flush the coolant.

I have my driver side valve cover off on my 89. I had to remove the smog pump bracket. I had a hell of a time getting it off as the metal pipe for the brake booster was in the way. I some how managed to pull it out. I say it will be a paint installing it.

I don't see how I'll get the passenger valve cover off as there is a metal piece that sticks out over the valve cover from the back of the head. It is for the plug wires.

Josh

For the right side you need to remove or move the egr tube and move the AC compressor forward. You don't need to take all the bolts off just enough to move the compressor an inch or two. If you are talking about the metal part that holds the plug wires just bend it back a little.

It's not too hard just time consuming. Don't forget there is a spacer on the 89s on one of the ac bolts.

On my 87 I only have to remove the EGR tube the bracket in the rear just bend it back out of the way I don't have to mess with the AC. The drivers side is a whole different story

Yup, I already know about the EGR tube and compressor. I just wasn't sure about that wire harness metal piece that sticks over the rear of the passenger cover, as I haven't seen it mention in any of the writeups.

I've got two writeup from the magazines, one from Corvette Fever in 2006, and then the one that is posted at Mid America I think.

Stripping the old crap off is a pain. I've got nearly all of it off, but there is a little bit still there all over the place. I'm letting it sit in the sun to get hot this time, then I'll hit it again with Aircraft stripper, and scotch bright it. Then probably get steel wool for inside the fins.

I had stuck it in the dish washer, and that didn't do anything.

I hope the blue Felpro gaskets I got from Autozone don't leak. The OEM piece is orange rubber and for some reason, is thicker on the edges than the Felpro piece.
