Default Driving with the top off???

Forgive me for asking a stupid question, but I am looking at purchasing my very first corvette tonight! It's a 1992 polo green/beige baby with 85,000. Asking price is $8500. In the pics of the car online, it appeared that the rear window was raised up or something(?). So I asked the seller, and he said that when driving with the top off, you have to raise the rear window up a bit so the air that enters the car from the windows will not cause turbulence and thus make alot of noise. Is this an accurate assessment? Do you have to do this for both highway and city driving? I've never read any mention of this. Also, with this many miles is there anything I should expect will need to be replaced immediately? Anything to specifically look for as troublesome on a 1992? I know, I know, the opti!!!! Many thanks to my (soon to be fellow) C4 brothers!

I forget who sells that gadget a member in Canada. It holds the rear glass open a couple of inches to let the air thru. I have one but don't tend to drive with the top off so I can't say if it helps or not.

The hatch "prop" or whatever you want to call it is available from most any aftermarket 'vette store. GM never supplied anythnig like it as "stock".

Not something you "have" to have or use, but it is a pretty neat idea.

I use one. Works a bit different with the rear spoiler on the car - air gets pushed forward INto the car thru the opened rear window, at any speed.

Ask if the water pump and/or Optispark distributor has ever been changed. With that many miles on the car, it's coming due for attention. Unless you are into busting you back and knuckles yourself, it could be an added expense to a car with that many miles on it. The car itself will go many more trouble free miles, but the "Opti" can be an expensive headache when it gets wet from a leaking water pump or a new car buyers first engine wash.

The assesory your talking about allows the airflow that comes through the car to exit through the back. The assesory screws on in about 20-30 seconds and hold the back window up about 2.5". It basically eliminates the wind wiping. Seems like a good price for car! Good Luck!!

Better known as a "hatch vent".

With the vent in !

With the vent out !

I love the vent. I use all the time, it gets the flow going when the top is off and therefore you dont get the turbulence feeling. Most effective on highway when there would be the most trapped air !

Ask the owner if it's a lemon........

Oh and that gaget is used for keeping the inside of your car from getting too hot while parked and not for while-driving airflow, I thought.

I tried mine and didn't notice any diff. in wind noise. Since I drive with the seat full back I get quite a bit of turbulence in my left ear.

Anyway, enjoy your new Vette and save the wave...

You only have wind problem if you have targa off and both windows rolled up.

It's really the side mirrors that produce the most annoying turbulance with the windows down IMO. The wind deflectors you can buy for the side mirrors REALLY DO work though. Driving, the air gets channeled into the cabin and slapps you in the ear. Wind defectors will get rid of probably 90% of that. Who knows, the car may already have them. If it's a vert, it should have them from the factory.

That rear hatch clip-I don't have one, and I have heard mixed opinions on it. Most say it doesn't do anything.

Bought my '87 coupe 2 years ago and it had the wind deflectors on the mirrors and I too will atest to how good they work. Big diff in turbulence from my buddies car that doesn't have them...

I use the hatch vent because both of us smoke and cracking the windows with the top on keeps the interior air cleaner. No preaching about smoking please.

Does anyone have a picture of a link to the mirror deflectors? I drive mine with the top off and window open. It has less noise that way and I can still enjoy the A|C. Gets pretty hot on the Beach in Corpus.
