C4's with CB's

Re: C4's with CB's (GiDvEtTe84)
I carry a 5 watt walkie talkiie i got from radio shack if I need traffic info it works out great. Plus it's small enough to store any where. Got it on sale for about $50.00. Didn't want the hassel of trying to mount a conventional unit or worring about how or where to mount an antenna :yesnod:

it was an option right up to about 1986 or so... I think 15 were so equipped in 1986...
Was a CB a factory option? Ive herd of 70's C3s with that option.

Re: C4's with CB's (bogus)
I saw a neat CB antenna for Vettes the other day. It mounts on the Gas Filler door and is the same size as a Cell Phone antenna. One of the supply houses had them (Ecklers, Mid America, etc) In fact you could use the mount as a cell antenna or cb antenna holder.

Yer cell phone is plastic, what does it's transmission reflect off of, your fillings? Ground plane is not that important with a good coax connection. I am sure there are some folks here much more educated on this matter than I, maybe they will chime in to correct me. :yesnod:

A counterpoise is always important!
Fact of the matter is, the filler door is made of aluminum, and there is a plate under the left fender around the stock antenna. This helps some, but it will never be as efficient as a metal-bodied car.
By the way, for my fellow hams, this antenna mount will work great for mounting a 2M/70CM antenna on the fuel lid. Buy the set, throw the CB antenna in the trash, and stick a good diamond or comet dual band antenna on the SO-239 mount.

I remember seeing a "kit" to mount a magnetic CB antenna on the rear hatch. Looked like it was a square metal plate that mounted between the glass and the latch using the thru glass mounting hardwear. I guess that wouldn't provide much of a ground plane. I wonder if the factory CB was a Delco-Bose unit too :jester

As I understand it: To properly attenuate the antenna, to match the
wave length, power forward and power reflected must be tuned.
The cell phone must reach the nearest cell, not bounce off the ionosphere.

I have a Cobra HH-28 4-watt portable that seems to work fairly well for club tours. It has both battery and 12v power. It seems to have about a 3-4 mile range for talking.
I also have a cheapie Radio Shack CB and a 4' marine antenna that I installed. I built a mounting bracket from 1" wide x 1/8" thick steel strap. It's bolted to the rear aluminum crossmember just above and to the inside of the right side tailpipe. The cable is just routed along the frame rail and over the suspension and into the storage box behind the passenger seat.
A marine antenna doesn't require a ground plane or grounding to the vehicle. The cable is about 16' long and it is not supposed to be cut, so I just coiled the extra up and placed it in the bottom of the storage well. I used a attaching bracket from RS that allows me to unscrew the fiberglass antenna when it's not needed (that way I don't have the antenna showing all the time). The marine antenna came in white, but I just painted it black so it wouldn't show as much. I guess you could always paint it to match the car.
The radio just sits behind the seat and I use the accessory power lead that's in the console. This setup seems to work a bit better that the hand-held but you do have to live with the big antenna out behind the car when you are using it.

Re: C4's with CB's (c4cruiser)
Havent put one in vette yet. I do have them in my other vehicles. The Ferrari is fiberglass, and my Lumina van is plastic too. They make a cellular type antenna that mounts to rear glass for CB, about $25. I just use those small 6" wide CBs from Radio Shack for about $40. works fine for a few miles. More reliable than a radar detector on roads heavily traveled by trucks.

If you count the C3's too, there were 19377 Vettes with factory CBs. The C4s are rare, with only 178 in 84 and only 16 in 85, RPO UN8. Looks like it was dropped in 86. If you've got a C4 with UN8, you've got a rare option!

Re: C4's with CB's (VetBoyZR1)
They make a special antenna kit for corvettes called The Corvette Buddy. It mounts to the top two holes of your rear license plate. I think mine was like 60 bucks. If any body is interested in it, shoot me an E-mail and I will dig up the address of the people that make it. If you also go into the C4 For Sale forum, My car is listed under 1992 Dark Red Mettalic Coupe...... and I believe one of the photos shows the bracket for the antenna.

Re: C4's with CB's (GiDvEtTe84)
With only 194 CB's in the C4's as an original factory option, I'd say your chances of finding one are slim. I'd bet that about 90% were removed. Afterwards when the cars change hands they may be forgotten about if no visible sign of there existance is left behind. Perhaps in about 10 years when people start getting serious about restoring them the owners will check the option code list and discover there car originally had one. They will go to Bloomington Gold and Corvettes at Carlisle for years in search of one sitting in a box at the swap meets, but will never find then. I would think more found there way into the trash then onto the garage shelf. I'm usually wrong though.
