94 6spd 1st to 4th system? good/bad
New to 6spd C4 from 4spd C3. Think I understand the 1st to 4th shift system, however would you folks expand on it? If I understand correctly it kicks in if you don't provide enough rpm when shifting from 1st? Correct? What is your experience with this system? Lastly considering installing a bye pass switch. Thanks for any answers.

Thanks again. Will make the change. First weekend with new car. Dry sunny 50 degrees tomorrow. The C3(400hp) was fun but what a change in this car. Great handling!! Gets up to speed very nicely. Looking forward to some road courses and long trips.

Don't waste your money. It's really easy to drive around it. Either by increasing rpm, push in the clutch and wait for the light to go out, or slide it into fourth then select the gear you want. Skip shift only requires that the shifter go to fourth. Once it hits that switch you can go to any gear you want. You do not have to actually engage fourth gear. In about a week you'll have it down and will all but forget it's there

It only forces the 1 to 4 shift when your just barely pulling away from a stoplight. Most "performance guys" will give it a little more gas than that.
A few days of driving it, and you'll know exactly how to drive it.
NOTE: In case you do get the skip shift bypass kit, keep in mind the light on the dash will still come on. It just won't force the 1 to 4 shift.

Many thanks. Yea I will give it time. Not doing anything until I feel like I know my way around the car. Just enjoying the difference in how these cars drive. I thought nothing could be more fun then my C3. Well live and learn. This is just a great driving car.

Another route; if you ever order a tuned ECM online or get a dyno-tune, it is very easy to program out of the ECM. Obviously this isn't cost effective in-and-of itself, but if you're planning something down the road, it can be done at the same time.
Have fun, and welcome to the C4 community! Save the wave!

it is there to beat the fed regulation MPG. Mine was disconnected 2 weeks after I bought the car.

In my 92' the light comes on if the the rpms are low enough, but it doesn't automatically shift to 4th gear? Is something wrong, My buddy said his Dad's C-5 shifts to 4th. Sounds almost like an automatic would shift from 1st to 4th, How does that happen with a manaul?

However if you just mean it does not force you to shift to fourth when the light is on, them chances are a previous owner already installed the CAGS bypass kit.

I have the CAGS elimination kit in mine (was already there when I bought it).
But I've watched what conditions would have forced that shift (by observing the dash light come on).
And in most cases, I would or could drive past those parameters if I wanted too.
Also, I would almost bet that at least 80% of the C4's on the road have already had this kit installed by a previous owner.
It's high up on the list of things most people install.
