I can see why for cost reasons GM made them stick on but man they would look SO much better molded into the body.
The stick on thing is kind of Subaru-ish (no offense guys)

No offense taken. GM did consider reusing the ZR-1 wide rear body panels on the '96 Grand Sport but in the end opted for the fender flares (which were attached with screws, not tape, to all but the first 3 GS coupes). Personally, I'm glad they kept the ZR-1 unique and besides, I like the look of the flares on the GS. So much so I added them to our GS convertible, too.

Flares
Why only 84 thru 88? Shouldn't they fit any C4 except the ZR-1?
I admit these are a lot cheaper than the fiberglass fender flares available through the Grand Sport Registry but... they do not appear to be fully finished and do not come with the double-stick tape preaffixed to the back or come with mounting screws. As usual, if you are willing to invest some sweat equity, you might save some money on the less expensive units. Good to have a choice but I'll opt for the higher quality components.

The '84 through '88 is due to the fact that the wheel flange on those years is INBOARD by 17 mm or so from where the wheel flange is on the 89 and up, when they changed the offset ...
so ..... you can actually put more tire in the wheel well of an early C-4 without, or with less, fender mods for the common offsets in this wheel size.
As for price, well, that's a matter of the availability, and/or the allocation, of resources that will vary for each individual.

I run 335/17 on 17x12's in the back, they stick out just a little.
But my car is not lowered.
The car above has been REALLY lowered front and back. If you notice the front has flares as well.

That's actually not a correct statement. While you do increase track width, you will adversely affect scrub radius (the axis around which your wheel turns). Increased scrub radius will increase steering effort and places increased loads on components. Just an FYI.
