radar detector opinions
i know this is not necessarily corvette related but....
I bought an escort 8500 x50 a couple of weeks ago, not that i speed or anything but just in case. Well last night on the way home it went off and about a 1/2 second later there is the hi-po crossing the median to say hi! from the research ive done this is supposed to be one of the best on the market. Any one else using these p.o.s's am i wrong in expecting more than a 1/2 second warning? Is the valentine1 any better?

I went with the Valentine One 3 weeks ago after much research. The Valentine One is the one to have hands down. The combination of the Bogey Counter and the direction which you are being tracked is awesome. The best $400.00 I spent in a long time.
Take your escort back and get the Vatentine One. You will not be disappointed!

I can't tell you how many people I've stopped for speeding who had radar detectors. Just because you have one does not mean you're immune from getting caught. The likelihood is greatly lessened when you have one, but when you have a cop that is not lazy and simply doesn't have his radar unit resting on the dash aimed at oncoming cars, your chances of being stopped are dramatically increased.
When the cop is holding the radar unit in his hand and presses the on button/switch when he sees the speeding car, it's too late. You've already been caught. Your reaction time cannot beat the electronic brain of the radar unit. If you get caught by such a cop, I suggest that you become the nicest person in the world. Friendly demeanor will go far in such a situation.

This is exactly what happened.

There is no $400 gizmo you can buy that will defeat an instant on radar or laser detector. They will at best tell you that you have just been clocked then you cross your fingers and hope for the best. The police do this for a living and you are no match if you are over the limit and do not see him up ahead which is usually the case, especially at night. These guys are pros and will always have the upper hand. The only time you will be forewarned is if he clocks someone ahead of you or is lazy and leaves it on. If you are pulled over and the LEO sees that you have a radar detector, it is usually an instant ticket. Ask me how I know. So I got smart, gave up on the radar detector I used in my 20s and now I keep it within 10 miles of the limit, go with the flow of traffic, and try to stay out of the left lane as much as possible and have not had a ticket in about 10 years.

That's why I have a cordless Escort detector. I only use it when I intend to go over the limit, and if I get pulled over, I turn it off and ditch it under the seat.
My last ticket was in 1996. I got pulled over about 8 times since and no tickets. I agree with the post below. I'm one heckova nice guy when I get pulled over. Diplomacy wins.

I've got a Beltronics Pro ??, it works. You just gots to remember, Radar is Line of Sight. Hills and curves will give your detector fits (and you get tickets-or whatever).
Use common sense and stay in the right lane whenever you can and don't figure on running 100 mph all the time. Even if the cop doesn't have his radar on, if he sees you passing a car like it's standing still, he knows you are speeding.
I've had cheap detectors and they ain't worth anything. I've had this one about a year and I've finally come to trust it. BUT, I still use some common sense.

I have all three models in my four vehicles. Passport X50 in a 03Marauder,a regular Passport in a 05 Z71Tahoe, a Bell in the 03 Jeep Rubicon, and a Valentine in the 92 convertable Vette. Oh and a Cobra I gave my sister (junk). I will swear they are all very similar in the warning time. The arrows(Valentine) being the only thing above the others. I have still gotten tickets with all. YOU CAN"T BEAT INSTANT ON OR LAZER...

I do not make up my mind if I am going to give a ticket until I get to the drivers door, if I see a radar dector it's an automatic ticket no questions asked, except license, registration and proof of insurance!!!!
