Automatic shifter button sticking?

Did you take off the button and look in there with a flashlight to see if something is jammed? Maybe some WD-40 would loosen it up. Can't help much on this but just a idea.

If the WD-40 doen the shifter shaft doesn't free it up, remove the button, **** and console cover to access the shifter mechanism.
Then you can see if it's a mechanical failture or a simple cleaning & lube issue.

You don't need that solenoid. It is only on the 95 and 96 A4s and is a stupid, unnecessary piece of crap. Pop the solenoid off, disconnect the wire and no more problem. The ONLY difference is you will be able to depress the shifter button without having your foot on the brake, all other safety features will remain in tact.
ps--solenoid is down in the shifter housing, driver's side rear and just a ball and socket that pops right off. Of course you will have to pull the console cover again to get to it.

This one looks more like a cylinder, about 3" long and 3/4" in diameter. It sits nearly vertical, left rear in the 'well' for the shifter mechanism. It is almost directly below the little light for your shift indicator. It has just one wire connection, is made out of plastic and if (big if) my memory is any good the body is black and the ends are white. Nothing fancy, it just pops off at both ends.

I finally had time last night to take apart the console again and try to yank this thing. It was exactly where you guys said it would be and after a few minutes of messing with it, it popped right off. The next morning it shifted like it was brand new. Hard to believe a simple fix was all I needed these past months of aggravation.

Drifting
Did you lock the pin out of postion or re4move it? I have not looked at mine yet but not quite sure how to remove the cover, any suggestions or instructions.
