Default Powder Coating Exhaust

Has anyone done this? I am putting together a custom cat back, and the thought came to me to have it powder coated?

Other than looks, anyone else think this is a good or bad idea?

I would think you could get away with it beyond the cats alright, but that's just a guess.

I guess I should have clearified, beyond the cats is all I was thinking of doing.

The exhaust tubing is aluminized so I know the welds can and will eventually start to rust, so originally I was thinking of using a hi temp paint to protect the welds, but then I thought how cool it would look to just powder coat the whole thing.

I would think the powder coating would burn off. They bake to powder for about 15-30 minutes depending on the type ow powder at about 400+ degrees. I don't think it would hold up over time.

umm!! Interesting, how hot do you think the exhaust gets starting at the outlet of the cats?

Yes, I understood that. Beyond the cats should stay well under 300 degrees measured externally with a digital thermometer. This was on a black painted Power Effects system that I used to have on my car. My current stainless system measures about the same.

High temp powder coatings are available from company's like Eastwood and Caswell. These go on like normal powder coating and are good at 800-1000 degrees. Eastwood even offers about 5 different colors of high temp stuff.

Default Yes and No

I have the B&B Triflo exhaust on my car and had the 4 oval tips powdercoated black. Looks great, no issues after 2 years. Although I didn't want it done the powdercoater didn't recommend powdercoating beyond the muffler, even with the high temp pc. Good Luck!

You can always have it ceramic coated. The local powder coater here does it.

Hi temp powder coating will hold up just fine on all your exhaust parts except your headers. The headers I would also recommend be ceramic coated.

Probably Black because I can't picture any other color that would go good with my car color.

I haven't decided on headers yet, for now just doing a cat back system.

The problem you will run into with that stuff is it will never cure. You bake it in the oven like normal powder but it doesn't fully cure until it is put into use. If it is not used on headers, or something that gets hot enough, it does not cure.

There is a company called Jet Hot that will ceramic coat exhaust systems. Google them up and check them out, if it holds up on headers no doubt it will work on exhaust. Call them and see.

Hi Temp powder coat cures fully in its cure cycle. Some ceramic finishes that are applied do require the heat of the exhaust to finish curing it and is only recommended for headers.

Thanks guys for all the comments. How much should I expect to pay from the cats back?

I am planning on going Saturday to see what the local charges, but I wanted an idea before I get there.

I would suggest a ceramic coat, will withstand the heat better.

The process to ceramic coat os basically the same as powder coating, Just need some different tips for the spray gun to ceramic coat. A lot of shops can do both.

vette92_1 ,
In my shop it would run about $250-$300 for ceramic coat of the outside only and thats for the muffler, cat, and pipes. times 2 for dual exhausts. Hi temp powder would be closer to the lower $200 range. It really all depends on the area you live in.

Ceramic coating application is very different from powder coating. Powder coating is a powder that is applied with a static charge using and special gun versus ceramic being a liquid and appled with a liquid spray gun.
Call around and shop for prices. Visit the shops in person and check them out.
