Default C4 governor??? (no I'm not crazy!)

I have a son who is getting ready to start driving, and needs a car. I have a '66 Mustang straight 6 but it needs a lot of work and isn't particularly safe by modern standards.

He wants a late model C4, but it seems way too many ponies under the hood for a beginning driver. Any way to de-power the C4? (Bet that question has never been asked! )

Late model C4 meaning 92-up?
Wonder if a rev limiter could be programmed to say, 5k .

OR, just get a TPI, it wont spin past 4500 or so anyway

oh god that hurts to hear the question, its like asking should i just take out the engine and replace it with a 20hp lawnmower engine.

But seriously I dont think you can govern them the way you want to, you can top out the high mph but i dont think your goinig to be able to do much about the accell and such

but i am probably wrong

Any year would be fine.

Of course the detuning would have to be reversible! Maybe we put it back to stock after a few years.

why detune?

the 92-96 LT1/LT5/LT4 Vettes all come with Traction control (ASR) and ABS.

These things are easy to handle, really. I think they are easier to drive than say a mildly modified L98.

The ASR is a real godsend.

It will keep you from screwing up in the wet or on dust.

The rest is teaching him responsibility.

A 16 year old and a Corvette = bad idea.

Scottydog, if you love your kid buy him a four banger, four door with all the modern air bags. Kids of this age are still developing "cause and effect skills" and tend to learn the hard way.

I'm speaking from personal experience that is just to painful to write about in detail.

And all you have to do is push one little button and turn it off. Anybody can diable it with a finger tip. I am 36 and I diable mine as soon as its started unless its not perfect driving conditions road wise.

I agree totally Grace, just wondering if I could make a vette drive like a Honda. lol

My first car was a Triumph GT-6+, damn near killed myself in it more than once...

Actually I have to agree with grace also, when i was 16 i was a dumbazz driver showing off all the time and i didnt even have a car worth showing off, if i had a vette then i probably wouldnt be writing to you right now.

I am 22 and have 5 accidents and 5 speeding tickets under my belt all from ages 16-18

Tell him you're getting him something else and if he drives well for the first say six months to a year he can have his vette, that will give him incentive to drive well too.

I'm not one to brag but every young adult is different. I was very mature for my age. I worked my a$$ off to buy a 97 jeep wrangler when I turned 16. And that was in 98. I think that you should make your son pay for the corvette. He will soon learn that speed costs money.

Not many people get corvettes as their first car but those recieving MUST be mature enough to realize what they are getting.

I worked my *** off when I was 14-15 to be able to pay for my gas and insurance when I was 16 then have continued to work my azz off since then. I would make him pay for insurance and car, not only will it teach him to be careful (explain how insurance spikes with tickets and accidents) but it will make him be more cautious of sometihng actually happening to the vette itself.

As good an idea as it may seem, and no matter how good a kid he is, a just starting driver & that much car is a bad combo. JMHO

Nice dad though!

depends on the person and how mature they are and how much you trust them. i got my first vette at 18 (2 years older) but my driving style has never changed, i am always careful no matter what vehicle im in. im an now 20 almost 21 and still no tickets/accidents! sad to say i cant say that for any of my friends tho!

I got a 79 L-82 Vette when I turned 16. I blew the motor and had to save to rebuild it and made it faster the love begain. I have NEVER had a wreck and only had a speeding ticket 2 years ago in my truck. I say go for it...

I am new to the Forum and at 53, I just became a kid again with my first Vette, a 95 Coupe. The first couple times I drove my black beauty, well let’s just say it is good the interior is black leather, it does wipe up nicely! I would think the best governor you could get would be a four cylinder stick shift. My son and daughter are both driving Wranglers and they both enjoy driving them. Seems the Vette is an automatic cop magnet, idiot target and respect for its capabilities needs to be mixed with road experience. Keep your kiddo safe and reconsider your choice for a first car.

And that was, by no means, a high performance, high horsepower sports car, was it!!!!!
