mpg read out problem

My mpg gauge on my 85 corvette is not giving an accurate readout It goes from 2 to 80mpg I tried reset button but doesn't help any suggestions on what i should be looking at? Thanks acinco51

Are you sure you don't have it set on instant?

Instant is the only setting to 2 - 80 mpg. Just push the button that is labeled instant.
