I inflate my tires to the recommended 35 psi as show on the driver door sticker. In fact i've never gone above 35. In the past I used to run them at 32 psi, but I changed to 35 and I noticed the car handles a little better, particularly in turns. Any cruise i go on i make sure to inflate to 35 for maximum fun and grip.

While high pressures (+30psi) make the tires feel better...quicker response being one benefit...you are actually giving up a good measure of ultimate grip.
Your Corvette has a recommended tire pressure on the door jamb. I wouldn't vary from that unless you have a valid, proven reason to do so....ESPECIALLY on the street!

for autocross (with kumho tires) I currently run 32 in back and 38 up front. Seems to work the best.

I don't ever automatically assume that the general knows what they're doing. Besides, they have other reasons for specifying tire pressures besides ultimate grip or turn-in response. Tread wear, ride quality, safety, assumed cargo loads, across the board ratings, buffer zone to account for leakage, etc.

The tires the general puts on cars are designed to be run at the proper specs period.Remember the Explorer debacle with Firestone a lot of that was do to improper inflation some people never check.

I did not say the general is full of ****.

You seem to think you know everything though.

I mount 600,000 tires a year I think that qualifies me as knowing something about this subject.I have to sign MVSS ( Federal Laws)documents once a week on wether they are correct or not. What are your qualifications CC?

Default tire pressures

After reading "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" I always put 100 pounds in my tires to prevent rollovers. Makes it slide real good.

If you are not familiar with the reference, it's a short read and quite amusing.

It's great to see people paying attention to their tire pressure, I am amazed to see people going down the road with 15 pounds or so in a tire, totally oblivious to the danger of a blowout. I purchased my Corvette with a nail in one tire and about 10 lbs of air. The owner never noticed. The spare was completely empty, and the bolt to the carrier frozen. After driving a tow truck for four years I was not surprised.

I play around with the pressures at the autocross. Tire pressures depend on type of tires and how the car is handling. I generally run 35 on the street. It gives me the best balance of ride, handling, and tire wear. Your results may vary. Also, remember that pressures increase with temp. Max pressure cold will exceed max when they warm up.

Playing around with tire pressure offroad for performance purposes is not an issue. The life you risk there is yours. But anybody who does it on public roads needs to rethink what they are doing.

Point of information, not so. When setting the bead, a higher pressure can, and is often used. Some tires can actually take double that number, not recommended though to set the bead.

On our equipment here a bell comes down on the tire and it is pressurized to 42-50lb then the bell rises to allow the bead to seat. When it is seated the pressure drops back to 35psi due to the volume increase in the tire as it is allowed to expand. The initial pressure is adjusted by tire type and size for example the P-Zeros 18 in are at 50psi and the 15in plain tires are at 42psi. so that the end product is 35psi + or - 3psi but we try to keep it right on the money.

When we have to mount one offline on equipment the same as your local tire shop it says not to go above 40psi but on the 17 and 18in tires we may have to go up to 50psi to get them to pop and deflate them to specs.

I know that specialty tires for tractors or semis may take more and someone else can speak to that point.

I started the other topic on tire pressure and after checking the factory specs on the inside of the door for tire pressure, I lowered mine to 35 psi. I drove with 40 psi and I can tell you, it definitely wont give you an edge on handling, in fact it'll make it harder by giving you less traction. Thats how I spun out.

Default Send This One to Myth Busters!

Aren't the placard recommended pressures determined through testing to be a compromise between safety and ride quality? Also, isn't the maximum pressure on the sidewall for legal reasons like product liability lawsuits arising from folks who would otherwise try 80 PSI and see what happens? As far as what pressure to run you would have to go run a lap or two and come in and measure tire temps accross the width of each tire and adjust up or down to get them even. Is 45 PSI unsafe? This might be a good one for Myth Busters. They could put a tire behind bullet proof glass with an air hose hooked up to it and see what pressure it takes to blow it out.

Regards, Greg

Default The Usual Disclaimer

OK...I forgot to include the required disclaimer. I recommend you run the door jamb placard pressures whenever you use your car for general transportation on public streets. For competition events run the pressures that permit the fastest lap times. Be sure to adjust your pressures back down for the trip home.

C5's say on the door inflate to 30PSI. But those are runflats, I have nothing amplyfying about standard tires.
