Default Vette Better Bang/Buck

Did you guys see the MPH magazine talking about how good the 308 Ferrari was, they never have anything nice to say about the Vette.
Well the Ferrari cost about 2-5k a year in annual repair costs. Thats a lot of cold hard cash. Plus the Vette will smoke the 308 in 0-60 times.
Really is a Ferrari or Porsche worth that pain in the check book repair costs??? I dont think so. Make mine Corvette. Vette is the best bang for the buck. What do you guys think????

Darth...

People don't buy Ferraris or Porsches for the 1/4 mile... And any 308 that costs the owner 2-5k a year is a basketcase. When driven, the cars are very straight and reliable. Do your homework.

Bang for your buck you can't beat a Vette, but i also can't knock someone who has something else, I can't stand Porsches but a nice 308/328GTS would be awesome, just not as a DD

I did do my homework and I got an A plus... The Ferrari if you drive it every 15k you will need a major tune up which costs 5k. The normal yearly bill is 2k. If you dont beleive me check out the latest issue of
MPH magazine. Thanks girls.

My vette is a 1996 LT1 14k miles now. Oh yea Im a college grad if that makes any big deal. Nuff said....

I believe some people purchase Ferrari's and Porsches not for their speed, but for the status that is portayed by being the owner of one.

Anyone can go buy a Corvette. You can get one for a few thousand dollars. Granted it won't be in good condition, but you cannot get a Ferrari or a high dollar Porsche unless the money is there and that is what some of these people want others to see.

Many of these people desire others to know that they have money. By driving around in one of these cars, that desire is fulfilled.

On some Ferrari's, a simple oil change will cost $700. Yes, that number is correct. And heavans forbid if you have engine trouble. A new engine on some Ferrari's can run $30,000.

Yes, some of DV's post seems a little contrived, but, hey, I have to admit that with all the flaming he's gotten so far, I've never seen him once strike back.
Maybe we can ease off of him just a little?
I know he's the guy we all love to hate, but pull-eeeze....

I think Darth's threads are entertaining To start a thread with a simple or beatdown subject, and stand back and watch everyone beat eachother over the head and compare cranium sizes cracks me up! To me there are many personalities that combined make C4 my favorite place to frequent

I have researched the 308...

First off, a rebuilt motor is about $12k from a quality Ferrari specialist. They are not that bad, in the scheme of things. The 308 is noted to last well over 100k miles before engine wear becomes an issue. The suspension can wear at 50k miles - mostly from bushing failure. Replace with poly, no more problems.

The real expense is with the timing belt. It's nylon and lasts about 15k miles. I wish they would release a modern steel and rubber belt, that would easily last 60k miles. I suspect there is a belt out there that will fit, I just don't have anyway of finding it. Later Ferrari's are now using conventional belts. A 360, from what I have read, should go 60k on a belt.

Also, you don't want to replace a clutch... ouch...

I have talked to many folks who have owned 308s, and they are basically a bullet proof little car. The structure is very sound, the electrics, very reliable (especially 84/85 vintages), the engines and transmissions, stout. Just don't go nuts modifying them; suspension and such is one thing, but the transmission won't take much more then the advertised output. Oil changes on a 308 are not $700.00 - that's reserved for the Ferrari's that require the $70.00 a quart oil (Enzo, F50, etc).

The trick to owning a 308 is knowing where the parts come from. For example, the temp sensor on the radiator is the exact same Bosch part as VW used on the Rabbit Diesels. The power mirrors are BMW parts. See? The alternator and air pumps are GM. AC compressor is Japanese of some sort, either Sanyo or Hitachi, I don't remember of hand.

The 308 will toast a Vette on a autocross course, they rotate and drive like no tomorrow.

There is a reason Ferrari's are so great. And in 1984, a 308 would run rings around a Vette... As will a 328 after it and the 348, et.al. The base Ferrari has always been a touch quicker then the Vettes, particuarlly on a road course environment.

In Europe, it is not uncommon to see 308s go lotsa miles. 100,000 miles or more. It is here we seem to think they are sunny day only cars... what a waste.

I would love a 308... 1985, QV GTB (preference) or a nice GTS. The QV had 240hp in a car that weighed under 3000lbs. My other choice would be a 355 GTB... I don't dislike the 328, but the new front end just didn't do it for me, and the 348 looks much like a Toyota MR2... besides, the early 348s had some seriously ill handling properties. A nice 308 will be in the mid-30s, a nice 328 in the mid-40s. A comparable 348 is marginally more then a 328, but not that much more. A 355 is in the mid-60s now.

308 = 3.0 litre 8 cylinder. It was a sidewinder. The first versions, 1977-79, had carbs - 4 weber 2bbl downdrafts. 1980 saw injection, 1983 saw the QV. The ones to avoid are 1980-1982. Pigs... 1983 is dubious, they had serious head problems; however, most were replaced under recall/warrantee.

328 = 3.2 litre 8 Cylinder. They added ABS in 1987 or so.

348 = 3.4 litre 8 cylinder.

355 = 3.5 litre 5 valve heads... strange thing.

Darth - Please back off on the Corvette as some kinda holy grail. It's a cool car and all, but bowing to it cult-like is more then a little disturbing.

Yo, Cuisenart - I hope I don't disappoint.

Hey Bogus... very interesting read. I've often wondered about an old F-car.

Darth: people buy Ferraris because they are Ferraris. They are the essence of a sports car. You can mod a bar stool to run the quarter in the 9s... you can mod a garden tractor to blow a Lotus away on the autox course. Point is, none of those things are a Ferrari.

I bought a Vette 'cause I wanted one (so did the Mrs... that never hurts the cause!). There are probably 50 ricers in a 50 mile radius who could blow my doors off at the dragstriip. There are probably 500+ sports car enthusiats who could hand me my azzz at autox. Point is, I've got my Vette, and I'm happy. Just like 99% of the other Vette owners out there.

Now that being said...

If you're posting topics like this to get real info, consider yourself informed. Now if your posting just to stir up some sh%$..... more power to ya.... some of it's DAMN funny!!!!

Cheers Darth!

Donald Trump was telling me the other day the Ferrari is highly overrated. I think I'm going for some popcorn and Cokes now.

Well... the Vette is a really good value and I for one do look at it in more of a cult-like way... It is an American Icon and it is an affordable classy car that perfectly melds the lines of muscle car and supercar... well that and I own a Corvette I don't have a Ferarri

I thought Bogus' read was very thorough and brought several facts to the table. I now know more about the 308's than I thought I'd ever care to know... but I'm happy about that

People buy Ferarris for the same reason I bought a vette... because they can. Once I realized I could afford this car... I no longer wanted a Camaro. Besides chics dig Corvettes... but they dig Ferarris more

Hey Vadar... if you have a Torch Red C4 with only 14k... why are you or were you considering a trade to a C5??? That is the kind of Corvette that everyone is looking for.. low miles... last of the C4's... and Mario said it was the best
