Default HOLY COW.. New Turbo came in today....

Hey guys,
I am in shock.. I knew the GT45 was going to be bigger then the T70, but JESUS... this thing is a 747 jet turbine..lol I am digging up my cam corder and will try and get some pictures up...

Anti.. forget ever getting this thing in your car and even considering closing the hood... I mean ya see the prints and dimensions of it but nothing prepared me for the physical size of this monster.. I am going to have to be very very carefull when building the hotside plumbing to make sure this thing is EXACTLY where it needs to be or my fiberglass guys are gonna be getting a call to do some fancy hood work.. ok.. lemme get the camera out.. whoo hoo

Acually, i don't envy you. It was enough work to get my little T70 in. When you start making big numbers, then I will probably be jealous, but not until then. I will hopefully assemble the engine soon. I ordered some of the little things needed to complete the longblock. Can't wait to see your pics!!

Man..Ihave torn my house apart looking for the damned little camera to PC special USB ocnnecting cable.. nowhere to be found! little bastard is hiding from the turbo i think... affraid of getting swallowed..lol

yeah, i know what the hell ya mean there man! my fabbing time just doubled as well as the housing is a split tang, so i will now need to keep the left and right bank plumbing seperate to the turbo which may actuall help out a little bit with spooling this critter.. but i would not be jealous at all if i were you.. i think what i have is overkill all the way from what i originally was looking for, but once ya start in, everything always changes.. so i guess if it will make more then what i want, i don't have to use it! and can always tone it down to what i am happy with!

I will get some pics up as soon as i can! gotta get myself a digital camera with a docking station!

yeah little damned cord sucks.. might have to wait till monday and borrow my pops camera.. his will take some much nicer pics anyways!

man i saw your wesite.. you my friend are also chittin in tall cotton! lol

Sunday begins the project.. tomorrow is shop clean up and fix wifes vette day then finally after a long time of planning and buying and planning and buying.. the work begins.. i am usually a one track minded individual so it should go continuously if not quick with progress made and pics and updates being documented of the small projects completion towards the whole of the undertaking.. Now that i am finally in the build mode i am beginning to realize what I have decided to do and what it is going to take hour wise.. but man i know the end result should be phenominal beyond anything i have imagined! I just wish things worked out the first time cause i am sure there will be redesigns and all kinds of snags and small problems that pop up along the way and after it is together and ready for tuning.. oh well just gotta tackle them one step at a time!

keep me posted on your progress!

Your turbo is not going to be too big is it? You know, 4000 rpm comes up and your finally now starting to spool that thing.

I know these aren't corvette pictures but, they might give you some ideas. That GT45 should use the same flange. http://www.msnusers.com/blueTphotos/...oto&PhotoID=38 http://www.msnusers.com/blueTphotos/...oto&PhotoID=36 http://www.msnusers.com/blueTphotos/...oto&PhotoID=37 http://www.msnusers.com/blueTphotos/...oto&PhotoID=35

And after you get all your plumbing done for the GT45 you can put one of these on http://www.msnusers.com/blueTphotos/...oto&PhotoID=27. That'll be good for 1250+ hp.

Bam,
I don't think it will be too big, I have been reading about them quite a bit over on the turbomustang forum.. they are good for maxxing out about 800-850 at the wheels, and the 360* bearings and the GT trim wheel is supposed to spool very fast. also, this is sort of a hybrid turbo from what i have gathered.. it uses a 77mm minor turbine wheel with a 88mm major and a 70mm minor compressor wheel with a 98mm major, the compressor wheel is still kind of small and light for quick spooling and the medium size frame it is built on, along with the fact that the turbine wheel is larger should help reduce backpressure in the preturbo exhaust... the larger turbine wheel with the 1.05 A/R on the medium frame is not as big as you might consider one with a smaller wheel on a small frame, it should act more like a .96 or even a .84 exhaust housing on a smaller wheeled turbo. so i think it will spool fina and if everything I have learned about it is correct i still should have full boost by 3k RPM which is perfectly fine with me.. as stated in my other posts, i am more after top end power then super fast spooling and petering out around 5k. besides when your in it and rowing gears the car generally stays above 3k RPM so i will just have to deall with some slower 60' times and be happy with big traps speeds which i am.. might help save the drive line from hard launches..lol

SloRVette,
those pics are awesome what size is that crossover tube going into the flange? i am going to be running 2.5" plumbing from the manifolds to the flange.. gonna have to play with it a little to get them welded up to the flange i have.. bvut i am up to the task!

keep the pics comin man!!

The primary tube sizes are 1.5". The crossover pipes are 2.25". One of the pictures in the first group is a GT42r, with the bigger compressor and turbine wheels and the larger A/R's. With my 274 cu. in motor, I was actually having to try to slow down the spool time to get the car to get past the first 100' without blowing the tires away. With what you've described spoolup won't be an issue with the proper tune.

Put some serious thought into fitting your downpipe. The turbine outlet is 5" and working with the bigger pipe isn't as easy as the smaller stuff. I've got more room in the engine compartment but still had to neck the downpipe down to 4" to get it under the car.

What else do you want to see ?

Sounds like you did your homework. I am used to being around early turbo Porsches where the guys put on big turbos just to see the big dyno numbers. That is great but their powerband was from 4-6500 rpm. They had to put lower gears in to stay in boost. They were only dealing with 3.3 to 3.5 liter engines compared to out 5.7 liter plus engines. They didn't have the initial torque like we do. I bet you are going to have some serious wheel spin halfway through your lower gears when that thing hits. Its gonna be fun.

The master power is not any bigger then the T76 on the compressor side, but the exhaust side is the same as the T88 from what i have gathered.. so it has a significant torque advantage of spinning the compressor wheel and will flow nicely on the exhaust side which means i will be gaining power with MUCH less exhaust restriction which means in the end just as simply as putting a freer flowing exhaust on a naturally aspirated car, it will "unlock" some of the power potential of the motor. some call this free horsepower int he turbo world.. this is some tidbits from reading through tech forums and Maximum boost.

Yeah, I agree, I have a feeling it is gonna be hard to handle when the boost rolls in.. i am sure the 315 nittos will get their workout.

my primaries are going to be the stock manifold on the drivers side for longevity and monetary reasons and a 62 vette ramshorn performance manifold on the passenger side which will allow me to run the downpipe out on the passenger side between the motor and the heater core.. I am going to use 3.5" piping for the downpipe as the GT45 turbo has a inside diameter of 3 1/4" for the turbine outlet.. this is going to be the largest pipe i can run unless i do a short spurt of 4" pipe then split it into 2 3" pipes.. i am wrestling with this design portion as we speak and i think once everything is mounted in the car I will make my final decision based on access to plugs and clearance for heat control.. but very soon i will be posting some pics of the progress.. just goptta get the damned motor from my builder this week and get it in the car.. also have to finish porting a set of heads for the critter once this is done, i will be able to finally begin the FUN STUFF.. fabricating!!!!!

any pictures ya have.. if they are on the web already point me to the address for carousing purposes and to look at other ideas and designs!

We recieved a large shipment of these this week, the turbos are very nice. Basically its a large frame T70 with a S class turbine wheel. THe flange is physically larger then a standard T4, but the bolt pattern is the same. I confirmed this on a set of headers with a T4 flange I have extra. Here are some pictures of these units...

BTW, They are from left to right, the SST-72BB from Turbonetics, MP-GT45, and MP-T70.

Jose,
does the "S" class wheel mean it is similar to the T76GTS? I know the T70 has the "P" trim wheel and I have seen the T76 also offered with the T76GTQ wheel.. can you define these for us?

Thanks!

No the turbine wheel is a different wheel all together. Its bascially a nice cross between the PTE-88 wheel and the 76GTS/GT42 wheel. These are the wheels inducer and exducers respectively...

PTE88- 3.27" I / 3.73" E
MP-GT45- 3.05" I / 3.46" E
T76GTS/GT42- 2.96" I / 3.20" E
