Default Custom blower installation

Just for the sake of conversation, has anyone taken a belt driven supercharger head like Vortech or ATI and made their own custom setup? Is this route more economical than buying a "kit". I have access to a full machine shop at work, and know a great pipe bender, so I was thinking about picking up a new or rebuild unit off of ebay and fabbing the rest, including custom pulleys.

A guy can dream, can't he?

Well, I guess I don't want to go CUSTOM custom, but more like DIY. The whole motivation is to save money, and have an excuse to machine aluminum and weld.

I've done several for my cars and others locally. If you choose the D-1 or the P-600B, I have spare brackets that I might part with (never been used, just templates as a starting point). The ductwork, IC, and other items will be dependent upon your skill level, as every person wants something different than the next person.

The only complete system I bought was my first ATI unit. I did not go to doing it myself because of it not being worthwhile from ATI. I did it myself because ATI did not package the components together that I was wanting. It also seemed that I was always modifying what ATI provided, so I just engineered my own package.

BTW, I just started a 2003 Trans AM ATI P1SC (7 psi system) install. The kits have changed in the last year since the last system (does not appear for the better in most cases). It will get headers, blower, clutch and lowering springs at the same time. Nice project. $7400 just in parts.

It'll probably be cheaper to by a used system someone has stripped out of their Vette. Building a setup piece by piece is going to be expensive.
