I have the FelPro FAST system for the '89, but all the factory electronics are basically gone. Therefore, there was no dash or accessory functions to loose. Combo is not running yet, so I do not know ease of tuning yet.
I have now concluded that the only way to truly get the most from the combo is to step up injector size (eliminate the FMU) and install FAST on my '87. This car however is fully streetable, and uses all the factory instrumentation and guages. Car has made 630+ RWHP with the factory ECM and an FMU. I think there must be at least an additional 50-70 hp with tuning. Maybe more? What functions within the factory digital dash and other accessories will I loose with the installation? What happens to the factory harness when the new system harness is installed? I would reather not butcher the factory harness or other items.
Hi Aron,
Go Look a Dave White's site. They have them all Accel/ Fast Performance systems and hookups to maintain all your factory gauges. That is what they say. Alot of people on the blown list use this guy. You may want to check about your average milage and fuel remaining meters because the different spark and A/F ratio screws that up. http://members.aol.com/bigturbo1/plugplay.html http://www.fuelairspark.com/
I imagine you have already been to the Fast page but if not there is a lot of info there also.
I talked to Dave White today. He is very knowledgable on aftermarket computers. Like everyone else, he proposed the FelPro FAST system for this combo. He suggested the Plug N Play system utilizing the FAST with 7-wire Wideband O2 and 2 bar MAP, utilizing the AIR solenoid wires as the N2O feeds for two stages. (This is a bit different than what I previously got for the other project.) His system utilizes connectors that route the factory harness back to the appropriate slots in the ECM. The original factory ECM is totally removed from the car.
The Force unit utilizes a stand alone harness that folds the factory harness away, but still utilizes the factory ECM to power the misc accessories. The factory check engine light will have to be disabled. The FAST ECM will have to be located somewhere under the dash, or under the passenger seat.
Both systems seem fully capable. But, White identified the fact that the fuel system will have to be addressed. On my '89, I ran an aftermarket 3-port FP regulator (Aeromotive, Weldon was a better choice according to Dave). This one will need to be the same, as he stated that the factory FP regulator as supplied by TPIS is not capable of handling what is being requested. Also suggested Bendix 78 #/hr injectors in place of the 36 #/hr FMS units I currently use with an FMU. I had previously thought I could get away with 55 #/hr injectors, but Dave explained that there is no harm in going oversize (within reason) with the injectors. Injectors, another expense that will have to be covered. The cost of the complete units, whether Plug N Play, harness, ect from Fast Times, Force EFI, or White Racing is within $200 of each other ($1,900-$2,100). All systems loose the calculation of mileage and DTE.
