Default LT1 Supercharger Question

I would like to supercharge my LT1, but I continue to see concerns over the bottom of the motor. I would like to run a vortech system, but if you run lower boost (say 6-7 psi) do you see problems in the long run on the bottom end?

I know if you go higher, you need to build up the motor, but will the stock bottom end be ok with lower psi?

Thanks in advance.

I'm running at 9psi. It depends on your driving habbit just as much as a spot on tune. If you've got a safe tune, you should be fine. if you're even running slightly lean and recognize knock, kiss it good-bye.

Otherwise, if you're not flogging it every second you should be fine. With the meth injection, it adds another level of safety (if you plan to go above 6-7psi).

Thanks for the feedback. I plan on a tune and was hoping it would be a dyno tune, but in SC there just isn't much in the way of tuning that I have seen. The kit comes with a tune from pcmforless.

The kit has an intercooler option, but at such low psi, I hear it may not make much of a difference until up get up to higher pressures....

Thanks.

well, based on the "small" intercooler remark, i imagine that you've got a procharger kit?

Greg (blowerworks) and a number of other FI experienced vendors don't really think an intercooler (A/A, A/W) is necessary for low boost applications.

in fact, the handful of vendors that I know of (none vette' companies) just use auxillary injectors or meth injection!

Interesting about the intercooler, I always thought it was making air really cool down even at 8 lbs. In any event it looks real cool.

Hi There - just my opinion but a basic low boost kit (5-8 psig) is not a problem with your bottom end. Smokey Yunik always said a small block Chevy cast crank was good to 600 HP.
The problem with any performance package is detonation. If you do not detonate you'll live long and prosper (Clint Eastwood?) ?

It always comes down to experience and knowledge and support for a successful project. You either learn the hard way or you pay another for their experiences - no ??

Greg, thanks for the advice. I agree, on the detonation, I am going to insure I update the fuel system, injectors, tune etc to make sure its done right.

I do remember that part in Josie Whales. But do you remember in Star when Spoak does his hand thing and says, "Live long and prosper"? The proper response is "Peace and long life".

When you said, SC, did you mean South Carolina? There are several reputable tuners here in North Carolina that could take care of tuning the car if that is what you are looking for.

PCM for less is based in Charlotte, I'm sure they would be willing to work out an in person dyno tune.

There's also several shops here in the Raleigh area that are quite qualified. Staples Auto Engineering, Mayhem Motorsports, Blazing High Performance, Ryan's Performance Machines, and a few others.

Maybe you could jet up here for a weekend and get your car dialed in?

Yes, I am in Columbia. I am going to have a local shop do the installation and he mentioned he would have to take it up to Charllote to get it tuned, so the car is NC bound somehow in this process. Thanks for the shops.

If you are a Clint Eastwood fan, go see Gran Tourino. Strictly a guy movie.

Pro charger seems to be a nice set up. That's where I'd go if I went FI. Tuning is so important. Are you doing anything with your cam and heads?
