Default Supercharger Owners, lend me your ears...

I have a 96 LT1 S/C Coupe (ATI Procharger) that sounds a bit "odd". I've already sent it back to ATI for service but wanted to solicit some of your thoughts. Since I'm new to S/Cing, I wanted to get some "outside" opinions. The clips are at (http://www.sgacorvetteclub.com/sound.html). I converted these to flash files to reduce the size, but please give them a chance to load. I look forward to your thoughts...JS

Are you sure is is getting oil?

Aside from that it pretty much sounds like it should.. they do sound like a "thrashing maching" at times especially when you rev and let up on it...

This S/C is self-contained, one of the reasons I went with Procharger. I serviced the unit after the 500 mi break in per the instructions/warranty information. I've put @ 2k on it and the rattle was progressively becoming louder. If you listen to the second file, the noise is consistent even when increasing the throttle. I'm new to S/C'ing and when tech support told me initially that it would make some noise and lessen as time went on. Should I expect this to be the normal sound when it returns from Procharger?

The best I could hear is sounded normal to me...

Mine makes various noises as well.. as I mentioned when you say rev and let up fast there wil be some noises form the pressure of the air hiting the throttle plates etc. You are using a bypass valve as well correct?

I would say you are good too go...

Mo

Yes, I'm using a bypass valve. I guess I'll wait to see what Procharger comes up with. Thanks for listening...JS

Mine is a D1 & today was my first real "trip" a two hour run out to the coast. Mine makes noise but more of a whine & gear noise, nothing like what I'm hearing in your vids. Yours is really loud... IMHO of course based on my also limited experience.

My son just finished installing a p1sc in my 95 and it sounds much differently than yours. I'm sure the folks at Procharger will figure yours out quickly. My son goes by lcvette in these forums. I'm sure he'd be happy to share some thoughts with you.

I've got a P600b and it doesn't make anywhere near the racket yours does! Are you sure all the bearings didn't fall out of their races and are being digested in the gearbox????
Or maybe that's just how the SC models sound? Like the D1 above, my non-SC is mostly just gear whine...

Yours sounds identical to my Vortech. I had the unit overhauled by Vortech in California a year ago with new gears and it is now extremely noisy at idle. However - above about 1500-2000 rpm the gears become quiet and it just makes a great wooshing noise.

If you are ever up Atlanta way give me a shout and we can compare supercharger noises!

Andy,

Default Update/Thanks

First, THANK YOU to all of who responded to this thread and/or provided me your thoughts via PM. I spoke to James from ATI today (our second conversation). Initially he told me that the service tech's notes indicated that everything was within specs. I asked that he listen to the sound clips and his response was to disassemble the unit himself and "take a peek". He informed me that the "input shaft and gear didn't look right" so he replaced them and noted a definitive drop in the noise on the bench. I should receive the S/C tomorrow with any luck and will post the new sound clips for comparison.

excellent! I am glad he put his personal attention to it.. I have heard horrow stories of dealing with ATI, but so far being even a second time owner of one of their blower kits, I have been pleased with the respectful and helpful service they have given me. now their product finish leaves a little bit to be desired as far as fitment but my head unit has been running like a top..knock on wood!

Default New Sound Clip

The sound file has been posted (http://www.sgacorvetteclub.com/sound.html). The comparison files to use would be video clip 2 (pre-service) and video clip 4 (post-service). I'm going to drive it for a few weeks to see if it diminishes more. IMHO, the sound has dampened. Again, thanks and I appreciate your thoughts. JS

That head unit is FUGGED..

You can hear the added friction inside the unit.. It should NOT sound like that at idle.. Any head unit that does = going bad, or no oil in it..

I had a vortech and a paxton and have looked at cars with ATI's, none of them ever sounded like that..

I'd demand another unit, NOT a service of the same unit if it's within warranty. I've heard some companies like to keep 'servicing' units just so they eventually get out of warranty and then they can tell the customer to have to buy a new one..
