Default turbo update pics 10-25-05 :)

well, won't type much, but worked this weekend on assembling the rest of the motor, I like to take my time and make sure everyhting is cleaned and put together properly. anyways, I have decided to run the mockup plumbing for a few weeks once she is ready before building the Stainless set incase anything needs to be changed. but had to bolt up the turbo stuff and have been sitting in the garage grinnin like a school boy making swooooosh sounds imagining what she's gonna sound like when spooling.. Gotta love boys with big toys..lol enjoy the pics!

thanks for looking in!

Chris

Wow! That is exceptionally clean! Is that a GEN 1 block with an LT intake? Or is that an LT motor converted to use a standard distributer?

Damn, man. I was in Raleigh last weekend for the Fair, I should of gotten in touch with you.

I just noticed your location says Wilmington, but it seems like you told me you were in Raleigh.

I'm up in Raleigh quite a bit, so if you in that area I'll have to get ahold of you.

If your remaking it in stainless.... I would say you should move the wastegate to the other side of the motor just before the turbo. Your gonna get reversion in the exhaust. It will help to control boost better also. You dont want to find out that you cant keep the boost down when its already installed and finished. Plus if you move it to the otherside, you can vent the wastegate into the exhaust so you can hear the turbo even more

...But other then that. Awsome work!!!

With the turbo at that angle, is it going to push the plumbing into the radiator? Is this going to be intercooled?

Hey guys,

thanks for the replies,

as for the engine it is an LTx block fitted for the distributor, I am running the same setup MN_VETTE has, DFI Gen 7 with the dual sync in the rear.

regarding the wastegate, there is simply no room to mount it closer to the turbo, I have seen several setups running it like this with no Ill effect, the wastegate is 50mm, that should be plenty large enough to bleed pressure pre-turbine and maintain any boost level I want which will never be less then 10 pounds of the factory set spring.

the wastegate does plumb back into the exhaust system the same way the stock pipes meet under the car closer to the tail section of the tranny, I did not want it venting to atmosphere just so I could enjoy the sound of the turbo without the raspy open pipe sound of the wastegate interfering and making the car overly loud in an unpleasant way.. after all that is the entire reason I went turbo.. tired of a lopey cammed setup that was mainly to be used at the track.. this way I get stock idle/driveability around town and can unleash some violent power when I get heavy on the right pedal. so once she is fired up and tuned we will see if anything needs to be changed, but I am confident for now it will be all I hoped and possibly more. thanks again for looking in guys!

Sweeeeeet dude. I'm jealous. I didn't know that you were going with a conventional distributor. I am also doing a distributor in a LT1, but only because I am using the 7749 ecm and my car is a 91 to begin with. Loved the pics. Can't wait till you take her out for a spin. I haven't touched mine in months. I will live through you for now!!!

CHRIS THAT LOOKS AWESOME!!!!!
really that thing is a beauty!

whats youre wastegate set at?

I know what I am asking for.. for X mas... a forged bottom end.. well LC bottom end.
ive been looking at the Banks Turbo kits.. and i think I might go with their manifolds, wastegates(prob set for a max of 9 psi at first) and oil returns and use garret turbos.. just because they give their compressor maps.

the only thing im still having trouble with is the planning the ignition and FM.

1.where did you get the opti delete?

2. do you think the dynaspark would work ok?

3. is it possible to change my Map sensor to a 2 bar and run the stock LTX edit to change the fuel/spark maps?

i only plan on getting about 600rwhp.. not the 800 plus like you do hehehe!!! and i always have my N20. but until i can change or beef up my tranny ill just buy the parts. and do the 355 LC install.

thanks alot Chris
your friend

LT4POWER,

the downpipe comes of in about 5 minutes and with it out all the plugs are very easy to access, actually easier then with the stock manifold or Long tubes. downpipe is only held on by 2 V-Band clamps that are very accessible...

WOW, looks really great. 1 question though, how do you fit the waterpipe onto the water neck above the stat? or does it just look so close in the pics. Bet you can't wait to get in and drive!

That is the same turbo location that I am going to use on mine.
I am looking at different options to route the headers now.

It looks like you have to install the engine with the passenger side header mounted. What diameter piping did you use?

Joby,

nope.. with the front of the car raised to loosen the V-band flanges for the crossover pipe, the passenger side header will come off on about 5 minutes, while mocking up the car, I made sure that everything could come off easy for maintenance. I can put the entire system on or off the engine while in the bay in about 20 minutes.

Ok, thanks!

I am going to try and put a flange on the passanger side header too. Then I can leave both headers on, remove the turbo, and connect a N/A exhaust. That would make it easy when I have to do the yearly emissions test.
