1972 coupe for sale, great condition, excellent driver
EDIT - June 16 - Car is already sold, and on it's way to CA :seeya
I've decided to put my 1972 up for sale. My asking price is $13,000. I will consider reasonable offers. I bought the car in 2001, and have put about 1200 miles on it since then. It is very reliable, and in great condition. Excellent frame, excellent bird cage. This car has seen 30 years of inside storage before I purchased it. It came from Ft Lauderdale, FL to Virginia in 1999.
A little about the car:
1. Odometer reads 73,6XX - it works fine, and due to the condition of the interior, frame, and my knowledge of it's history, it appears to be the accurate mileage, ie it's not 173,6XX
2. Paint - good paint job in "dark grey firemist". It's a PIA to find touch-up for this color, however Mercedes "black opal" is just about a perfect match.
3. Engine - not original. it's a 400 block with a 1973 casting date. It has been bored to 406, and has been decked. All work done by an engine shop in Ft Lauderdale FL, but I don't have any original receipts. Goodies include TRW flat-top forged pistons (I have pictures when changing the heads), a solid-lifter cam with Crane lifters. There is a double roller true timing chain.
4. Top end - I replaced the carb, intake, and heads. I switched to 400 block heads that I bought rebuilt from Lars. He machined them for 7/16 screw in studs and guideplates. Heads have Crane Gold roller rockers. Intake manifold is an Edelbrock Performer. Carb is a Q-Jet from a 1969 350/350 Corvette rebuilt by Lars. Original distributor rebuilt by Lars with new center rod and other small parts.
5. Operation - car runs great. She's a little hard to start on cold days, especially when I haven't driven it in over a month.
6. Other engine stuff - That I can recall at the moment: Holley mechanical fuel pump, ceramic-coated headers with 3" collectors, Taylor plug wires, MSD 6A module, MSD Blaster coil.
7. Car has a higher than 3.08 ratio rear end. I was told 3.73, but I don't have documentation. RPM highway at 70mph is about 3300. 7 leaf rear spring makes me think the rear end and spring are part of GM's performance package.
8. Interior - Excellent shape. Original floor carpet is a little sun-faded. I replaced the heater core last year, works great. AC needs charged, but the compressor works fine. It's one of those chrome ones from MA Designs. All gauges except the clock work. Tach cable needs lubed, it bounces a little. Heater controls all work well, no vacuum leaks.
9. Vacuum - considering the cam only give about 9" of vacuum at idle, surprisingly enough the headlights and wiper door both work GREAT! Somebody has replaced all the vacuum hoses, and even epoxy-painted the actuators.
10. Brakes - New rubber connecting lines, and I had to add a small vacuum reservior before the brake booster due to low engine vacuum at idle. I replaced the fluid completely and flushed the system 2 years ago. Calipers were all replaced by a previous owner, appear to be stainless-sleeved.
Basically, the only "original" parts on this car are the body, frame, and some of the interior. Other than the engine, all replacement parts appear "correct". So, you're basically buying a NOM 1972 coupe without the headaches of 30 year old worn out parts.
I'll update this ad as I think of more things.
Please email me at: jfisher@env-eng.com if you have any questions, or wish to purchase this fine machine :D
Jeff
PS- it's an automatic, TH-400. Appears to have been rebuilt when the engine was put in the car. Tranny has never missed a beat, and the fluid is always REAL clean, almost too clean to see on the stick sometimes.
Also, this car can be driven just about any distance. We took it to Carlisle two years ago, about a 12-hour round trip. No overheating, excellent trip. The only drawback was the loud exhaust and wife trying to speak over it
EDIT - ceramic headers, not heads

Re: 1972 coupe for sale, great condition, excellent driver (thejaf)
I found some pictures on my computer here at work. Some of them are rather large, so I'm putting links to them rather than posting directly.
Mall show last fall:

Interior and other shots when I bought the car, summer 2001. Car has been driven abour 1200 miles since, not much change.
Finally, a shot of the interior BEHIND the dash, showing the condition of the firewall, etc. I took this during the heater core replacement.

Bump again. Took it out yesterday, nice firm ride, no annoying rattles. Actually, this is the only C3 I've ever driven or ridden in that felt this tight. Most have been rattle-traps that cause mental illness in 17 minutes.

Bump once more. Drove it again. Better start making some offers before I decide to just keep it and wait an extra year or two before getting a 1969.

Bump.
FWIW, i'm putting it in the local paper tomorrow. Also, to be clear and up front I will not take less than $13,000 for the car.

Sweet ride. Wish I could take it off your hands. Bad timing though right now. Have 3 Vettes and getting my 34 Ford painted this month so good for now.
To the top for you. And love the music. Have much along a similar vein. Have a little studio myself for laughs, enjoyment, and therapy.
Joe..

Joe,
Thanks for the compliments! I haven't had any takers yet, but I'm not complaining. Last couple days have been real nice, and I've driven it some with the tops off and the back window out :steering:

Looks like a beauty!
Send me some more pics of the car outside, rather than in that mall. (if you have any)
Send them to,
smook@connection.ca
Interested. Because it looks tight!
Cheers!
Bill.

Bill,
Thanks for your interest. Drove her to work this morning, need to get state inspection this month. She busts through the country roads very nice, no handling problems, no rattles and shakes. Just nice and tight, quick acceleration (and LOAD :D)

Beutiful car. I'd give my left nut for it. Unfortunately my left nut isn't worth $13k.
I checked.

Jeff...don't sell it! I have been sanding mine...and bought a tubing bender. I put more bars in the Corvair, and will put at least a 4 point bar in the Vette.
