All,
New guy looking for his 1st vette. Live in Atlanta, but thinking about making the 4hr commute to see this car. Here's what I know from talking to the owner (in addition to what is posted)...
1) Selling car because no time to enjoy/work on it
2) Mostly garaged the past 2 years. Car has developed a shimmy that he believes is due to flat spots on the tires (from sitting too long). Worried about possible wheel bearing and/or suspension issues here.
3) Right headlight is lazy and sometimes requires meat-servo assist
4) Will need paint...massive chip on the hood, and noticeable chips at other places
Trying to get opinions from the vette experts out there. Is this a good deal based on what you know? Anybody near there want to help me check her out? Really appreciate any feedback! Thanks in advance and looking forward to the hunt!
$13,500 is short money for an AC, two top convertible. However, paint is very expensive (especially with a color change), the automatic brings it down a little, missing AC compressor. The pics really don't show enough to make a fair assessment on value. The known problems he lists are not insurmountable if you have any mechanical skills. My Advice:
1. Have someone knowledgeable on this year go over it carefully.
2. Check out the frame and "birdcage" which is a major structural area prone to rust.
Thanks for taking the time to reply Capevettes! I just noticed my photoworks links don't work...re-attempting. Some of these pics show parts of the frame and suspension. All I can see is surface rust I believe, although won't know for sure until I can look in person.
Hi RT,
Having a knowlegable person check it out with you is VERY important. I hope this works out with Ed.
You'll need to try to determine what you'll want the car to be to make you happy, decide what amount of $$$ that will take, and then you'll be able to decide how much is a sane amount to pay for the car as it is now.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Ala
Guys,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Ed gave me the skinny on this car. Sounds like the pictures aren't up to date and don't reflect the current state of the car...major red flag. I think I'm passing this time...By the way, if there are any forum members in the north Atlanta area, PM me...offering a set of willing, albiet somewhat inexperienced, hands for whatever dirty corvette related jobs you may have (best way to learn in my book).
Raptor,
I am in Alpharetta, and can assist you with your vette hunt. Let me know if you are going to look at any cars in the area and i can help you out. A good book to pick up is the Corvette Black Book. Lots of info on all corvette years and options.
Good luck!

Frank,
Thanks a bunch! Looks like I'm going to check out a yellow 69 vert in Piedmont Alabama (approx 2hrs from me) either tomorrow afternoon (post-church) or next weekend. Here's the link...not much detail though, just a few pics. Seller has come down on price to 15K, so It's definitely worth a look to me.
Jeff
P.S. Are there many Atlantans on this board? I'll like to pick your brain for the local gouge (clubs, activities/shows, paint&body shops, good garages, etc...)

Good luck on the visit. Make sure you go over the car with a fine tooth comb. Body gaps, filler, etc. Get underneath and look at the seams in the wells. Next is the frame, rails, A pillars and birdcage-make sure NO RUST! Also documentation is a huge plus for these cars. See if they have history, service receipts, etc. Check electronics, AC, wiper door, etc, etc. These things are always issues. Lastly, originallity is always desireable. check Engine code for #'s matching (if that is important to you) and also color codes. More original, the better it will hold its value and resale-ability
Many, many Atlantans around. I am not sure of garages in your area, but ask around, I am sure you can locate a good one.
Black book is great. The Prince book is okay, but your best info on everything Corvette is right here on the forum!
Thanks Frank. I'll post pics and thoughts when I get back from the inspection. Right now, looking at these cars, I kinda feel like a dog looking at a stopwatch! Gettin' smarter every day though...
Jclgodale3,
How can you tell, or have you seen the car up close?
Thanks.
The 68 and 69 body's did not have the built in (fiberglassed in) mudflaps behind the front and rear wheels. GM started this in 1970 due to customer complaints of rock chips early on. In fact...the rear wheel quarters don't even look correct for a 70 and up. Someone did a good bit of glass work on this car(for some reason)

Exhaust exit's are incorrect as well....It looks like a whole different rear clip...with additional glass work.

I agree, and i´m afraid you are right as well, nevertheless the car could be a nice driver tough. It seems like the seatcovers are not correct either and perhaps not even the seatframes. (Seats on 69 have a separate neck-pad and on 70 above there is just an one piece design for the back.)
