Default Black 1980 L82 4-speed wanted

I've been looking for a black '80 L82 4-speed car for several years now. I saw one at a show several years ago but the owner wouldn't part with it. Has anyone seen one lately or know of the exhistance of one?

There were no production 1980 L82 4 speed cars that made it to the public. A couple (?) were made for early testing, but destroyed. All 1980 L82 models have the automatic transmission. 1979 was the last year that you could get RPO L82 w/ a 4 speed.

Do you mean testing purposes at the factory? Car&Driver, MotorTrend, and Road & Track all tested L82's with 4-speeds. I'm just curious to where you got your information. I talked to a man who had a car with this engine and trans combination. I know he could have built one himself. You are probably right because I haven't seen one and have been looking for years.

Richard,
Over the years I have read a couple of different articles on this subject. It has also been discussed before on this forum, but it has been a while (maybe something in the archives?). I do remember that the articles mentioned that the test mules were supplied to the automotive press for testing, prior to the official release of the '80 model Corvettes. I don't remember exactly why there were no 4 speeds, but I think it had something to do with emissions????? Also, if you have a copy of the Corvette Black Book you will notice that there is no engine suffix code for the "82 w/ MT (manual tranny)" combo. It also states: "The 4 speed manual transmisssion was not available with the optional L82 engine, with the possible exception of a few early production builds." If one of these early production test cars made it to the public, then it would be worth big bucks!!!

squeaky: This discussion was related to whether there was an 1980 model with L82 and 4speed. There were plenty of L48 cars matched up to 4 speeds. Your link to the '80 model for sale does not mention it is an L82. I would venture to guess that that car has the L48 base engine!

Mark

Thanks for your help. I'm going to have to decide which I want more, the 4-speed or the L82. Thanks to Squeaky g as well. I will be picking up the 1:18 scale Baldwin Ko Motion '67 convertible. I have a Maroon '67 BB convertible.

Sorry about the Ko Motion link, that was for somebody else. In regards to no 4 speed L82,s in 1980, are the ones I see adverstised homemade 4 speeds? I always thought the 4 speeds in 80 only weren't sold in Calif. that year, but were available everywhere else?

1980 CHEVROLET CORVETTE, , L-82, $10900, 4-speed, dark blue, oyster leather, 60000 very nice driver.COLLECTION.COM, (800)-439-8388.

squeaky g,
I have been going to various big Corvette shows over the years (since early 80s) and have seen a fair number of L48 cars that someone has re-emblemed as an L82. Unfortunately, some people buy these cars, not knowing any better, then sell them later as L82s. There was recently one of these on E-Bay. I think it was a 79 model though.

And again,
Also, if you have a copy of the Corvette Black Book you will notice that there is no engine suffix code for the "L82 w/ MT (manual tranny)" combo. It also states: "The 4 speed manual transmisssion was not available with the optional L82 engine, with the possible exception of a few early production builds." Buyers Beware!!!

It's not quite black, but it is an '80 with a 4-sp. I don't care much for the custom mods on it:

KingRat,

If you like the looks of the 80-82 model, and don't want to mess with any computer (81 & 82), then grab an 80 L48 4-spd. Minor engine mods will easily get you to L82 performance. As a note, always check VIN's. Vettes sold in California in '80 had a 305 (LG4), not a 350 (L82 or L48). Also, the Corvette Black Book is an EXCELLENT source of info on any corvette you're thinking of buying. I'd highly recommend you pick one up prior to any shopping. Good luck!

I've got a '79 black-on-black 4-spd. Haven't really thought of selling, but....
