1973 Ontario Orange L-48 Convertible FS [MI]
Up for sale is my 1973 Ontario Orange Convertible. My father was the second owner and has owned the car since 1993. He gave the car to me back in May. It is an L-48 automatic. The car has power steering, but manual brakes and no a/c. The car has @6K miles on the odometer now and it has for sure been over once. It is a numbers matching car. It is Ontario Orange with black interior and a black top. It also has a removable hard top. The car was originally Classic White, but that was changed at some point to the orange. I'm no expert, but to me the paint swap was very well done. The only place it is even noticeable is on the louvers on the hood and deck lid, and under the edges of the carpet where the top folds down.
In 1994 we replaced the radiator and the core support. We also replaced all four brake calipers with SS calipers from Muskegon Brake (receipt included). The front bumper was repainted at this time too. The car has always been garage kept and covered since we have owned it. It was not driven between 2002 and May 2009 when I took over ownership. Since then I have replaced the distributor with a HEI ignition system. I also replaced the plugs and wires. The car now runs and drives very well.
There are a few things that I would put in the negative column. The interior is in good shape except for the carpet. The car was stored in a pole barn for most of the 2002 to present and during that time something chewed two spots in the carpet. One on the floor on the driver side and one on the battery door. The seats and dash were not harmed. The door panels are in good shape, but in the corners they have cracked, and were covered with the stick on covers. The second issue is that there is a power drain. It is either in the radio or the power antenna. There is a quick battery disconnect that I use to keep the charge when the car is parked. The rest of the issues I would term as minor. The Tach no longer works because of the HEI ignition. The tach is cable driven and would work if it could be hooked back up. The windshield wiper arm on the driver’s side in two places has scraped the front windshield. Neither is directly in front of the driver. At low speed the back left side wheel/brake clicks. It has since the brakes were done, and I don't know why. It does not affect the stopping power.
I would put the condition of this car between good an excellent. I have driven the car around two dozen times since I got it running at the end of June with no problems. The body and paint are in excellent condition. The frame and birdcage are clean and solid. As I said above the seats and dash are in very good condition.
Since the car is 36 years old it is being sold as is. The buyer will be responsible for any shipment or delivery cost. Please feel free to ask any questions. I will set the asking price at $17,000. I will consider all serious offers. I will post more pictures this weekend weather permitting.
Thanks for looking.
UPDATE 11-18-09 Please read to the bottom of the thread as I have updated the price and description.

Car looks nice. Does the trim tag come back to Classic White (no Imperial in '73)? No interior color change?

I have always liked "Ontario Orange". I had a 72 with that color. It almost looks like a bronze. I don't know if they carried it over to 73, but if they didn't, they should have, because it looks great on this.

They did not carry it over from '72. Ontario Orange was a 71/72 color only. It was actually the most popular color in '72. I get a lot of compliments on my '71 at various shows.

I apologize for not getting pictures up yet. It has been raining for the last few days here. I do want to correct one thing from the original post. I talked to my father and he informed me that the door panels are not in quite as good of shape as I thought. Apparently years ago before I got the car he bought those stick on covers that go on the armrests of the door panels. Apparently underneath they are pretty cracked in the corners.
Hopefully tomorrow or Sunday I can get some more pics taken and posted up. I have adjusted the price too.

Ok, I am sending this post back to the top. Since I have had the car in my garage and at my fingertips since August I want to make some updates to the cars condition.
As I stated above, I installed new plugs and wires and an HEI ignition back in July. The car does start and does run, but the HEI is definitely not hooked up correctly. I used the existing wire from the old coil, and as it is explained to me, that wire is a resistor, and not getting the HEI enough juice at crank. When you transition the key from crank to run, it will catch and turn over. I can walk out to my garage right now and start it, but it is not correct. Second and closely related is the choke is not opening consistently. This I believe has to do with the start sequence the way it is now. To open the choke you need to pump the pedal, but the way the car is starting (incorrectly) if you pump the gas too much it will flood. I am certain that when the HEI is hooked up correctly the choke will no longer be an issue.
I have purchased an HEI wiring kit and a relay kit for the car from MAD electronics.

I tried to hook up the relay, but I guess I am not as smart as I thought, and I can't get it to work. I am still trying to get the relay hooked up correctly, but as it stands now that is not the case.
This is the reason I have once again lowered the price. Please feel free to ask questions. I will try to explain as best I can.
Update 7-1-2010: I got the HEI wired correctly. The car now fires up the first time every time.
