Apr 2010 Edit: Hey folks. I had this up for sale back in '08. Obviously, it didn't sell, so I just hung on to it since then. Now I'm looking to put it on fleabay/craigslist shortly in prep for moving early next year (I don't want to haul it across the country…again, for the 4th time), and this is the best time of year to ad it, imho.
I've researched a bit, but as you know, prices vary widely based on condition. I think I could get $12K for it, but I'm interested to hear what you folks think would be a fair asking price. I think some of the people around hear have a good idea on price because they watch 'vettes come and go, and are, frankly, more knowledgeable than I.
What do you think is a fair asking price? (PM or post is fine).
(BTW, since I'm not actually trying to sell it here, mods can move this thread to a different spot if it doesn't belong in this section, or let me know where to re-post).
Thanks,
Eagle
Hi all,
Aug 17 edit: Car passes California Smog. Price reduced to $14000.
I'm looking to sell my 1981 Vette, since I've had it for about 14 yrs. I really like it, but after 14 yrs...
Info:
1981, Black on Black, 4 sp 59,000 miles
I had restoration (remove/replace) work done by Corvette Specialty of California for the following (will email a scan of the itemized list to anyone who wants it):
Brake Pads, new
Rear Calipers Rebuilt
Front and rear brake rotors
Brake lines, hose
Master Brake Cylinder
Valve cover gasket
Steering wheel - leather, brushed aluminum
Inside Mirror
Driver and passenger seat full leather and foam
Actuator, front side door lock
Door handle assy, left
Window motor left and right
Replace Windshield (I cracked it trying to remove the old inside mirror )
Brake fluid, engine oil, anti freeze
The drivers' side mirror is manual because the mirror piece fell out, and I can't find an electric one...the passenger side is still electric, operated from the center console.
Some pics:
As for asking price, NADA "average retail" says $19,875. Since it has the manual mirror, and the paint is showing some wear, I am willing to sell it for $17,000. If you need it shipped, I will take $500 off the price to account for about half the shipping cost (from Redondo Beach, CA).
Im somewhat interested in your car but... NADA pricing is as bad as Barrett Jackson auctions....a REAL DREAM... My own opinion is that you are a bit on the high side for an 81 that is needing some paint attention. You can PM me with a dollar fugure if you like. I have my own opinion of the worth after seeing what others have asked and actually sold theirs for. Otherwise, nice looking Vette. A repair to the rear bumper and it will really look good.

I bought an all original 81 last year... Guy that I got it from put new t-tops , and a few other interior pieces. Original seats and paint.. I cleaned it all up , buffed the car and the paint looks new and shinny.. there are some nicks here and there... the wheels I buffed and repainted the black. Im really happy with car... ANYWAYS, I think it looks a Tad cleaner than yours... I paid $5400 for it... BUT it has 39k miles, the guy claims original and I think it is 139K miles... still starts and runs as new , and its a daily driver, everything works including AC.. When I insured it they booked it way up there as well, But I dont think people are breaking out with cash right now, I see nice vettes on ebay and the bids go up but fall way short of the persons reserve.... Ideally in a good market maybe you could get that price, but right now IMHO I would find it hard for you to get over 8k-9k... You do have the milage thing going for you though..AS well as I think the standard tranny is a plus..Thats just my thoughts from watching ebay and craigslist on what those are askng and what are selling.
