Default Help pricing 70 Lt-1 convertible, Sold

Sold, Thank you everyone that had an interest in my car. Just so everybody knows the power of this forum, in one week I had 17 serious buyers and a small handful of tire kickers. I answered 35 e-mails and 10 private messages on the forum. Or maybe it's the power of an LT-1, I don't know. Anyway, a big THANK YOU is in order to all. I was hoping that someone from this forum would buy the car and someone that had the intention to further repair the car as needed. Well...I'm sure that happened. I used to hang out here on this forum shortly after it was started years ago and it was invaluable to my efforts.

I sold the car out of need and it will be missed.

Robert

Need help setting a price on my 1970 LT-1 convertible. I recently had a serious accident (no not the Vette) that is forcing me, very much reluctantly I might add, to sell the LT-1 quickly. I have no documentation, but there is no doubt when you go over this car that it is an original. This car is also an early LT-1 with the 6-quart oil system. There were very few Lt-1's with the 6 quart system.

It’s not a perfect LT-1 but is nice looking with reasonably nice paint. The interior was redone with new leather seats and foam, door panels, carpet etc., top was redone in 99’. This is not a frame off restoration in fact I don’t consider it to be a restoration at all it is just a great old classic that had a cosmetic upgrade.

All numbers match; engine, transmission, intake, exhaust, differential.
Carb is not original and the original distributer is not in place. other than that most everything looks to be original. Frame looks solid. The engine and drive train appear to have never been touched (not rebuilt) It runs and drives good but could stand to be rebuilt. I say it needs to be rebuilt but I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this car anywhere for any distance it really does run pretty good. I can see why these cars were so popular back in their day, They reek pure unrefined power in a way that is not like current day cars. You definitely know you are driving an original muscle car.

I am a 50 year old non-smoker that takes good care of his cars but this LT-1 is not perfect. It is however, in my opinion, one of the rarest Lt-1’s out there. Bridgehampton blue, power nothing (except the motor), white top. Headlights and wiper door actually work. They pop up and down without hesitation. And the fiber optics work as well but need some work to brighten them up.

By the way, Corvette Fever did an article years ago, you might remember, that says this particular model is one of 88 left in existence according to a survey they did.

Help me out, I haven’t kept up on LT-1 values especially 1970 convertibles. It seems that all the LT-1's I see are perfect with documentation and they want 30-50K for them. This car is far from perfect but looks and drives good. What do you guys and gals think I should price it at to sell it quickly. I don’t have a lot of time as I need to sell.

I live in Bellingham, WA if that helps.

Thanks a bunch for your help,

Robert: FYI. There were 6,648 1970 convertibles. There were only 1,287 LT-1's. I do not know how many were LT-1 convertibles. Someone here probably will.

The May 2005 Corvette Magazine, Vol. No.17, just published a market report on C3's. Over the last 12 months 1970 corvettes saw a 5% price increase.

Current 70 Convertible prices as follows: Crummy $9,000; Decent $15,500; Good $19,300; Fabulous $26,100. Note: Add up to $13,500 for LT-1

Hope this helps. --Patrick

It's Tough to tell you much without pics. Even then it gets like splitting hairs. One Man's vision of a decent driver is anothers idea of a beater. etc.. or "One man's trash is another man's treasure..." something like that. Anyway, I wish you the best on selling & getting a fair price.

If you could get pics up that would be great!

LT-1s are tough to put a value on, but I think the numbers above are a pretty good starting point. The value is determined by condition, originality, and documentation. How long have you had the car? What has been redone other than the interior? Is the paint original?

Thanks Patrick, That's helpful. Don't think I would charge that much for my car but it's gives me a ballpark.

There is a picture link on my original post now.

mstanton,

I've had the car since 1999 and have had absolutely no trouble with it. I occasionally have to adjust the lifters since it's solid lifter.

It has been repainted. It's reasonably good for an amature paint job. The chrome was all redone and is beautiful. All emblems were replaced. Windshield was replaced but the side windows are original with the Astro-Ventilation emblem on them. The front steering and suspension have not been rebuilt but I do have new poly parts and just haven't got around to it. In fact I have a ton of new and original parts that will go with the car. The rear bearings were replaced by a professional. It has new exhaust (2-1/2") with Delta flow flowmaster mufflers, sounds real good, just right, not too loud. As I mentioned in my original post, the engine and running gear are original and all I've done is clean under the hood.

mstanton,

I don't have pictures under the car or the engine. I'll get out tomorrow after work and snap a couple. The underneath looks like a typical unrestored 1970 Corvette, surface rust and grease. The frame is solid in all the usual problem areas but does have surface rust. The engine compartment looks pretty good considering it's unrestored.

Default Update

Here is some additional info. I checked all the numbers and put them into my computer back in 99'. This was copied and pasted out of Excel so it's a little jumbled up but it's readable.

Robert

Vehicle Identification Number 194670S404701 Original

Engine Number V0203CTU Original

Engine Production Number 70S404701 Original
Engine Casting Number 3970010 Original

Body & Trim Plate Numbers B24 Paint 979 Trim 403 Original

Transmission Numbers POA26B Casting Number 70S404701 Original

Rear Axle Numbers 1CFA 1 6 70 W Original

Intake Manifold Numbers 3972110 Original

Cylinder Head Numbers Casting Numbers 3927186 Original

Additional Head Numbers GM51 A60 L22 15 Original

Alternator Numbers 1100884 Original

Carburetor 3310-2 0996 Non Original This is a Holley that looks like the original that needs rebuilding, I'll include it. Currently has an Elderbrock in it, 650cfm.

Distributor 111084 Non Original (currently have MSD tachdrive Distributor in) the dist. that was in the car is a dual point tach drive out of an early Corvette. Maybe someone needs this dist. I'll sell it if someone has an interest.

Thanks Tom all input is appreciated at this point. I'm going to try and get some more pictures up tonight. This was an un-planned event and I'm trying to work and deal with my accident at the same time.

Without really looking a tthe details in the car it is hard to put a price on it. Remember a car is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. A lot depends on how motivated you are on selling it. It is a nice looking car and can be anywhere from a low of 15K to a high of 30K. A lot depends on small details and documentation. I can see a few small details that are not original but they are easily fixed. It looks like a good driver but not an NCRS car. Good luck selling, I'd hate to get rid of something so nice.

Gordonm,

Now there's a familiar forum member. I used to hang out here back in the day and remember you.

No the car is strictly a driver at this point. It's a head turner though. I haven't driven it in 1-1/2 years or so and today I took it out for a 50 mile shake down. Shouldn't have done that, it makes me want to keep it although I can't at this point. The car runs and drives good and definately turns heads but it's far from NCRS. When I bought it I had no intention of showing it or trying to make an NCRS car out of it. I have no desire to show, just love cars.

Thanks for your input,

Robert

Default $21,000 Obo

OK, I finally made a decision on price. $21,000 OBO. Four people have contacted me directly and I thought it only fair to get the price out there for everybody to see. I believe this is a fair price to any buyer and it's fair to me. The car needs some work and I believe this leaves enough room that you could put some money into it and still come out OK. At the rate 70 LT-1's are going up this is a steal

I took some pictures today that are posted at http://photobucket.com/albums/y104/deeinman/

I'll try to get some pictures of the undercarriage tomorrow.

Take care,

Robert
