4 1/2" Bolt Pattern on Wheels---80 Vette
I have read MANY 
post on CF about wheel/rim and tires. The ones I read--ALL said" 4 3/4" bolt pattern with 4" backspacing."....WELL one part was Right 
----4" backspacing on stock alu. rims. I measured my 80's lug pattern(wheel removed)....center of stud to center of stud...yeap--4 1/2" same as a chevelle/el camino/camaro--F/body....

Man, you are messing me up. I am planning to order a 5 4 3/4 bolt pattern next month. My understanding is this is the GM standard.

You're measuring it wrong. 4 3/4 is the diameter of the wheel stud circle, not the distance between. Small / medium Ford and Mopar are 4 1/2. Vettes, f-bodies, GM midsize have always been 4 3/4. Full size, police and taxi are 5".

If you measured 4 1/2" center of stud to center of stud that IS 4 3/4"
If you measured 4 1/4" center of stud to center of stud that IS 4 1/2"
GM used 4 3/4" or 5"

i think you measure from center of one stud to the outside diameter of another stud....don't ask me why i don't know....i bet an on line wheel manufacture has instructions on how to measure....

You need to measure between a stud and the one not next to it but the 2nd one. So 1st and 3rd. You measure from the edge of one stud from a point furthest from the other stud to the center of that one (this measurement gives the longest distance from edge of stud one to center of stud 3)

just out of curiosity how/why did they come up this measurement technique?

it would be measuring the diameter of the circle if you were actually measuring center to center distance of opposing studs, however w/ 5 studs there are no opposing ones. You are not measuring the actual circle diameter.

It's a circle, that's why. 4.75" is the diameter of this circle - it would be a lot easier to measure if there were 4 or 6 bolts/holes ... this is difficult to explain with words, a sketch/drawing would probably help more...
never was strong at geometry.....and now i know why....still don't get it...but thks for the answer....

WHERE IS MY SIGN ???? I measured from CENTERED of 1st stud --then skip one ----then measured the CENTERED of the 3rd stud. GLAD ya'll cleared this up for me.....now I can sleep better knowing I ordered the correct rims bolt pattern (4 3/4") last Thur.( I was thinking-up some GOOD story to tell the wife--- "let see...yea... I can blame it on CF"---why I had ordered the WRONG rims).

You measure from the center of one stud to the backside of the opposite stud.
