Default COMP CAMS Warranty Claim

Has anyone ever had to file a claim with COMP for a wiped cam? If so, was it painless or did they try to avoid honoring the claim? I think my turn is coming.

What makes you say your turn is coming?
Just curious as I have a Comps Cam also.

Comp Cams does not have honorable people working for them.

They were a real problem when I was billed three times on my VISA card for a cam that took 7 weeks to arrive when I was promissed 7 day's.

Crane is very honorable. I had 20,000 bad miles on a solid roller and they replaced them at their cost which was @60% of what i was going to have to pay through Summit $800 and something for Crane cam and Pro lifters. I didn't even ask the guy on the phone offered it to me. I didn't expect a penny because it was my fault.

I just replaced an XE262 (wiped lobes after 6years use) with an XE268. The new cam is exhibiting the same symptoms the wiped XE262 was. I slathered it with Red Line assembly lube and broke it in for 25 minutes at 2000 - 3000 rpms. I haven't confirmed it's wiped because I'm in denial but this week the intake is coming off and the lifters will tell the truth.

Hopefully, if it comes down to it I'll have better luck than you did.

1) vacuum bouncing 12-15 at idle 2) Slight miss at cruise 3) rough on hard acceleration, will not pull strong, power is way down. 4) some roughness on moderate acceleration 5) motor is not linear/smooth pulling through the rpms. I know those are symptoms of a number of problems but I've been through the ignition, carb, timing, etc. The car is driving exactly like it did when the last cam went bad. I can feel it getting progressively worse. Plus there's metal in the oil.

nastee,

My XE262 lasted about 5000 miles. I replaced it with an XE274 which lasted less than 500 miles even with a lot of breakin lube. I am now running a milder Crane HR276 (218/226 @.050) which gives a great low end and pulls to 5500. I may step up a size but for now I am really happy. Worth the $$$ to go hyd roller in my opinion.

Did you prime until oil was coming out all 8 pushrods? I ran a XE284 for while in a stroker (till it ate a rod bearing) with no problems, I was amazed at how long it took to get oil coming out all 8 pushrods (15 to 20 minutes at 500 rpms) with an elec drill, makes me wonder how long some parts go without oil if not fully primed on a new/dry eng.

My XE262 lasted over 6 years, over 25,000 miles and over 100 1/8 mile passes, many with N2O. This XE268 lasted less than 100. I thought about roller but I'm in the midst of another project. I have also considered another brand of cam but that XE262 performed much better than I ever expected in my car. If COMP will replace the cam/lifters I'll probably try it again. If not, I'll go with something else.

It wasn't a new motor but I primed it anyway. Oil was coming out of the pushrods.

500 rpm drill is like 1000 rpm crank ... that's adequate speed. It'll take a LONG time (if ever) if you prime with only a long primer that looks like a long intermediate shaft /screwdriver shaft ... that's because you need a full sized primer to bridge the oil galleys at rear of cam ... just like a distributor does. Without the bridge the oil just dumps out of the oil galleys and hardly gets to the lifter bores (& then on up the pushrods). Get a fullsized primer or convert an old distributor to use as a primer (I use old distributor) ... takes only seconds when there's a bridge. Look at bottom of a distributor ... it has two bosses that are about 1.247" diameter ... those bosses form the bridge. An effective primer must have bosses about 1.247". Look at a high dollar MSD distributor ... it has an o-ring on each boss to further isolate the bridge.
