700R4 question
I saw a plug in module the prevents the 700R4 from locking up the torque converter until it is in 4th gear. For the life of me I can't remember where I saw it.
Anyone have any info?

I have one in my 72 chevy truck, it uses a hydralic pressure switch to lock up the converter in overdrive only.

One of first to convert to 700's
I put my 700 in before anybody was selling kits back in the 86 or so time frame. I have a 50 amp lighted toggle switch which might cost $5. I decide when to lock or unlock the tranny.

As I study the wiring of any of the combos of a 700 tranny in my '87 vette svc manual, I find no combo that does not allow lockup in at LEAST 4th gear, my particular tranny in my '72 here allows lockup in 2-3-4 gears....anything but first.....
THEN I have a manucal switch on my console, I can flip it to lockup in 2-3-4 regardless of shifting or speeds, anyting...
the shifts are scratch hard then....
OR I flip it to computer which locks it up when going 50 mph or faster....so I can take my pick....
NOW, having said that, when this tranny was built and first installed in '97, I had a C4 vette converter in it....2k stall, and sloppy as hell, far as I"m concerned....except for sound it was hard to feel a shift .....could sense the tranny slapping home with it computer controlled, but no pleasing bump to it....
so I tended to leave it in 'manual' mode, meaning allways locked up beyond 1st gear.....that way the 3/4 clutch pack and th4e 2/4 band took full engine torque, with NO give in the converter,
needless to say after a few rounds of that, those parts failed....
so on this rebuild, and then also down time 3-4 years ago...one of the things was to change the converter to a truck converter, tight as hell....I just pull into neutral at lights....engine idles at ~800 rpm.....
so then the shifts feel fine enough now with the computer controlling the final lockup at 50 mph or so....
so I rarely if ever use the full manual lockup into 2-3-4 gears anymore, seeing if the life span of the tranny is better or not...

I have the toggle on the dash because I have the line lock button on the shifter.
Gene - your on thin ice if your shifting under power with your converter in lockup 2-3 3-4. Stock lockup clutches are @19 sq inches of holding surface. Even with a bigger pump and 1/2 inch selenoid/lines to increase holding pressure. They were not made to do that. I burned the lockup out on a 3800 stall 10 inch so I went to a 3 clutch 9.5 inch 3500 stall

GKull, you may be right for all I know, I just know the converter was fine, and the fluids were also.....problem was the 2-4 band was stretched and near failure at BOTH ends, the pin anchor, and the part with the activate pin...both were severely stressed.....
the 3-4 clutch pack was fried, period....toast beyond....
so those were weaker links than that lockup converter, just another Dayco rebuilt....
but NOW I just use the tight converter to give a LITTLE slack and keep it in the computer 50 mph mode....unless I feel really friskey....

I like to lock it in 2nd at about 3000 rpm's and rev the eng, car jumps up and down just like a manual trans. With the gear spacing it is also nice to be in 3rd and lock it between 45-55 mph, keeps the revs up in the powerband better than in 4th.

Here is how I wired mine. Give automatic control in 4th gear if you want it or manual control in the other three gears. No reason for a brake switch interface or a vacuum switch.

If you have an 82 you can put in a Hypertech chip and that is what it does to gain some of it's increased performance claims. I have one in mine and have been happy with the shift pattern.

2k2c5,
I just installed it and so far its great. I don't many miles on it but it was real easy to install, all you do is unplug conn. at trans and plug it into the new harness ans plug the other end of the new harness into the trans. Try to do it with cool exhaust because you have to reach above exhaust pipe on the drivers side of trans. I will be going on a 3 day trip with the vette this weekend, so I will be able to really tell how it does.
