Vibration damper
Howdy,
Can anyone tell me where the vibration damper is located. I found the timing tab, but the Chilton's makes absolutely no mention of where the vibration damper is. I'm attempting to reset my timing, and the location of that stupid dampes eludes me. Thanks,

??? is this serious? the damper is on the crank with the pulleys in front of it, in fact the pulleys bolt to the damper. When you look at the timing tab, the thing under it is the damper:

You mean the harmonic balancer/dampner? That's the big round thing right underneath the tab. Or am I misunderstanding?

Holy god, guess I am never asking a question here again. Had the car for about a week, never worked on an engine in my life before, and like I said, the Chilton's manual doesn't have a picture of it. Man, some of you guys are asses.

You're going to have to grow a thicker skin if you want to hang around here for any length of time. If you'd said the above right off the bat, the replies would have been more user friendly I'm sure. Don't run off just yet. This forum is a wealth of information for all things Corvette.

Well that's what threw me off, because I didn't see the groove. The damper is circular and the groove just happened to stop where I couldn't see it. Or is the groove always supposed to be on the top in aligment with the timing tab?

you need a timing (strobe) light to adjust the timing. When all is well and the light is hooked to sparkplug wire #1 (inductive pickup) it should flash with the groove somewhere near the timing tab and if you set it right it will sit at the amount of degrees timed in, or at 0 if you use a dial back light and set it to the correct amount of degrees.

uhm??? the damper turns because your crank turns. If your engine runs the damper is turning at crankshaft speed. that's why you need a strobe light, so that it fires when the crank is in the right pos (cyl #1 igniting) and it will appear as a still picture of the groove against the timing pointer.
I suggest you do some reading on howstuffworks.com before attempting to set the timing, and this is not making fun I'm dead serious here.
In my pic the groove is at the correct position because I set the cyl #1 to top dead center to stab the dizzy and to fab the pointer so it would accurately read in the correct degrees (the sharp pointy thing is the pointer from the gear drive and as you can see it's not only off, it's also very hard to read properly being that far away from the damper)
