More gears needed in my 69
I have just gotten back from a trip to the beach in FL. Had fun except for all the trips to the gas stations. I was in a caravan of C4 and C5s. They just about did the whole trip on one tank. We were cruising at 65 - 70 mph. My baby was cranking the RPMs at 3300! The gas gauge dropped pretty fast.
What are the options for 5 or 6 speed transmissions? I was told about an overdrive add-on this weekend too. Anybody done these conversions?
Besides the gas, my sidepipes make me deaf on long trips at that rpm
Pros or Cons
thanks,
Steve

Re: More gears needed in my 69 (19Shark69)
I am looking to do the same. I did a little research...TREMEC has a 5-speed with a descent 5th gear (.68:1 if I remember correctly). Keisler Automotive Engineering sells the tranny and a kit that will bolt right into a C-3 for around $3000.

Re: More gears needed in my 69 (Perfomer)
There is a 5 speed Muncie that will be coming out in 6 months or so. There is a thread on it in C2. I am waiting to see how this turns out as it will be a direct bolt in with M22 internals and a new strong case.

I put the Tremec TKO behind my big-block and am very pleased with it !!!
At 70 miles per hour, I only tach 1800 rpm's .......... just a high idle ! I got mine from Dark Horse Performance and fabricated the rest --- a fairly easy installation. The only extra money I put out was for a new shorter driveshaft and to get the shifter welded. Dark Horse, Fortes, & Hanlon Motorsports are the 3 that I know that rework these trannys to fit chevy. By the way ----- on the highway I get 17 miles per gallon with a 450 hp BB. Gotta love it ! Rick

Re: More gears needed in my 69 (19Shark69)
19Shark69,
There are plenty of posts on the Tremec and other 5 and 6 speed conversions. Do a search on T56, richmond overdrive, TKO, TR3550,keisler (supporting vendor?)
I believe Tremec has recently launched new versions of the TKO with the Chev I/P shaft and bolt pattern including offset shifters.
I have a Tr3550 behind my 427 and love it. 3.7 rear end and .67 O/D equals 2100 rpm at 60 Mph, 15-18 MPG depending on how I drive.

Re: More gears needed in my 69 (SHAKERATTLEROLL)
Les, the outfit that is building it is called Autogear (Autogear.net) however the last time I looked they didn't have anything about it on the website. The post about it in C2 is current and the title to the post is something like Transmission or correct Muncie gear lube. The guy on C2 named Muncieman is the authority on this as I believe he will be a dealer. He said there will be a close ratio and a wide ratio version and will be a true direct bolt in. The gears will be made in Italy. You might remember the various magazine articles recently on their buildup of a new Muncie M22 4 speed with the new case and gears. I think one of the articles was in Corvette Fever. Anyway it is the same outfit. I am very interested in the 5 speed as well. Bill.
