Re: C3 Gas tank upgrade?? (KenSny)
Kensny,
I knew it was a different tank, but I assumed that they were all the same size to be able to fit in there....so I assumed it was 13 gal stock....never knew they came with an 18 gal tank.
I didn't an do not know that it has a bladder, but assume that it has to due to the difference in what I can get in there and what it should take......something must be causing an obstruction somewhere
That's what is so great about these discussions....you start at one point and with the help of a lot of enthusiasts get to the correct facts and as well get to learn new tricks of the trade
I guess from your comments that different years have different size tanks?
Is it a big difference or just a gallon or two?.....not talking about specialty Corvettes with the huge tanks :)

Here's a pic:
. . . the fabricator is a friend of mine and we swapped favors, parts etc and worked it out that way. He said he can make more of them for about $400 but he's in Europe so shipping would be a killer. I took mine as checked luggage on the plane during a business trip there.

A '74 and earlier no-bladder tank has the sending unit on the bottom. The '75-'77 tanks have a removable bladder that is ripe for collasping. Later years have a non-removable liner - not a bladder. '75-'77 have the sending unit on top (the filler neck is part of the sending unit). I know for a fact that a '74 and '75 (because I have worked on them both) are the same size tank - 18 US Gal, with the differences noted above. A 74 tank will fit in a '75 just like the '75 tank. You will need to re-plumb the rubber hoses because of the fuel pump and vapor lines.... but it's minor.
You need to figure out what you got.
Take a look at the filler neck. If it's a large opening (pre-75 nolead) it's for a 74 and earlier. If it's a small neck then it's for the nolead pumps and it's a '75 and later.

Mine is a small neck, so 75?
How do you get the bladder out?
Any mods needed to the tank once the bladder is out?
If I could get specs of a the largest tank that could fit in there from the bottom, while keeping the spare wheel I will definitely have one made
by a sheet metal shop!!

It still could be a replacement tank. I think I read somewhere that replacement tanks had the nolead small neck as mandated by Federal law, but it's possible that other makers used the large neck. The '74 I worked on had a large neck. Whatever.....
Is the sending unit on top or on the bottom? If on the bottom then no bladder......
I just had a thought (I know dangerous.....) but since the Feds were changing the lead - nolead requirements I wonder if early '74s had the large neck and maybe late '74s had the small neck. Maybe some '74 guys will chime in....

Did you do that after 9-11??????????

What about the larger tank available on C2's? Could that be made to fit under a C3? I think they had an option for a 24gallong tank. Have no idea if it is available as replacement or not... If you really want to see a large tank, I thought the one for Merlin was very big...

I wouldn't upgrade my tank unless it was 25 or more gallons... I would gladly sacrifice the spare tire area and use a smaller spare.....
