Default Vapor Canninster Install: 1978 Corvette

Does anyone with a 1978 Corvette have a picture of where the vapor cannister is installed? I am trying to figure out what direction it mounts.

Does anyone who has done this install have any installation tips?

I believe yours is probably the same as mine.
If you could post a pic, I would appreciate it.
Is it mounted to a frame member, or is it mounted to the body side?

Also, I have a connection diagram for all of the top connectors, but what connects to the bottom of the cannister?

I think i finally figured out how this is supposed to mount, but I now believe I have the wrong cannister mounting bracket.

Anyone have pictures of their cannister (and its mounting bracket)?
Anyone know which year cannisters were the same?
How can I tell that it is even the right cannister at this point?

Also. Can someone confirm their Part #, And/Or does anyone have access to a GM Part # dbase that might reference anything this old.
- The Part # I have seems to be 1706310
- The Part # according to my service manual seems to be 17056979.

I don't have part numbers, but here are the best pics I could get. It is mounted to the frame. It's easiest to access through the gill.

a little closer......

I believe the bottom is a drain...

Avette4me:
Where is that first picture "through"? Can you somehow take you gill off to get to your vapor cannister? On mine, the gill is part of the full side panel.

The mount I have looks identical to yours. Although, I do not see any holes in my frame it would mounts too.
All indications I have found is that mine might () mount to the back of my wheel well with some sort of flat backed mounting bracket.

MadVet.com part numbers would seem to indicate you and I have the same vapor cannister though. My part number is etched right on the top side of the cannister. Would it be possible to check for one of those two numbers on yours?

The first pick is through the gill, with it removed as is the second, just closer. I think my bracket is tack welded to the frame, but I didn't look very hard when I took the pic. Could probably check in the morning if you like.

Personally, unless your trying to make your car a perfect NM car, I would not hook it up. Somebody might prove me wrong, but mine has been bypassed for quite some time without any problems and leaving fewer places to leak vaccum.

My car is not a show car, so I am not really concerned about originality. My only real conern right now is that I don't actually have holes to attach the cannister too (and i don't really want to create frame holes to put it on). I believe mine is probably the right cannister based upon my connections diagrams, but I believe I just have the wrong mounting bracket.
Thanks for all your help so far!! I has got me way further than I was before.

Now to just find the right mounting bracket. :banghead:
Anyone with a 1978 who can chime in?

While I can't comment on your '78, on my '75 the canister does mount behind the driver's wheel well with three bolts. The heads of the bolts are visible in the wheel well. Good luck.

I'm fairly sure 78 and 79 are the same. On my 79 it is mounted with a bracket that is bolted to the rear of the driver side wheel well. Access is best from below. You will find a horizonal panel directly below the master cylinder that can be removed with 4 fastners. One of the bolts goes to the rocker panel and is the most difficult but not bad. Once that panel is off you can clearly see all you need from below-no stretching either! Good luck.
