A NASTY I think- diagnosis help
Ran the Vette Monday--perfect--put it in the garage--last night I went to take it for a spin and OUCH--smoke white and blue poured out the tail pipes--shut it down--opened up the hood and oil was everywhere--upon closer inspection I first thought that the oil sending line had ruptured or the compression fitting came loose--not so--then I noticed the breather tube on pass. side was off and that seemed odd--pulled off the air cleaner and Holy Dog Doo--lots of oil--which would explain the smoke(my past experience is White smoke--water, blue smoke--oil, black smoke--gas) anyway upon calming down, I started to analize: what would make oil back up through the carb?
1. oil pump---Nah
2.rocker arm on exhaust valve--possible-- haven't pulled cover yet
3.hole in top of piston because the exhaust valve dropped down
:mad
the more I think about it--there is not much that would cause that kind of pressure--any thoughts--good or bad at this point would be a help--in this case the Vette was a good substitue for NO DOZE--Dave

Could the carb be sucking oil up thru the breather? Do you have a PCV valve on the other side?

I've seen a collapsed exhaust pipe cause the oil dip stick to shoot 5' in the air.
Exhaust pipes will sometimes collapse on the inside, look fine on the outside. Sounds like a build up of pressure pushing oil out and this could cause it.

There is a PCV on driver side valve cover--I shook it and it rattled--that about the only way I know how to check those unless you replace it--explain the collapsed exhaust pipe thought--would it be like when we were "little gremlins" and tried putting potatoes in friends exhaust pipes? :reddevil

The part that is bugging me is--what happened between shut off and restart???? This Winter I changed all fluids, greased front wheel bearings, put the right rear spring in( the old one was a truck spring or something, that made it sit up way to high) but it ran fine the other night. I did have the valves lashed this Spring and that is kinda a premesis for my exhaust valve in the piston theory. Need to get home and pull valve cover--Damn I shouldn't have to work--I have the perfect personality for a Millionaire--what happened

Are you certain you don't have a "helper" around doing mechanical stuff? Is it possible someone had the air cleaner off and added oil to the carb? What does the oil on the dipstick look like? Just some thoughts.

Super clean--I just changed it less than two week ago--still haven't had a chance to pull the valve cover--had to go to a Meth workshop last night--scarey stuff

Did you check the intake manifold bolts. That's one source of water and oil. The rear or front bolts dont have to be very loose to allow water to pour in. If all are loose (which might indicate a lack of thread sealer on the bolts) the oil may have come from driving the previous day. Just a thought.

I agree--first thing Saturday morning--I've kind of danced all around hoping for an easy cure--got a funny feeling--that would still be hard to explain--what happened between shutoff and startup.
